So I was throwing away our old queen mattress, and as I was getting the dumpster lids open I spotted a bunch of Unix textbooks and an Apple Pro keyboard laying face down at the bottom of the dumpster. The dumpster was almost empty, so I used a long pvc pipe to pull the keyboard up so I could reach it. It was a little dirty, but not obviously damaged. After getting the mattress into the dumpster, I took the keyboard home and showed my wife, saying, "Look what I found in the dumpster!". I plugged it into my TiBook and guess what...it worked fine! So I told my wife the keyboard worked and wondered why somebody had thrown it away. The keys looked like somebody had spilled something on them, so I figured somebody spilled a drink on it, thought it was borked and tossed it. Then my wife was like "Alex, what makes you think that was a drink?" And I said "I dunno, I guess it was," And, looking at the crusty substance on the keys, she said "Well, it doesn't really look like any kind of drink...you know...." So I realized...that it could very well have been ejaculate. I yelled and ran into the bathroom to wash my hands...then spent half an hour scrubbing the keyboard down with Clorox wipes. I still got a free Pro keyboard though! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Lord of the Mac II Series Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 http://www.cinemafia.net/forums |

If you are going to keep it, just make sure you dowse it with Lysol. That's the stuff to kill almost anything. I use it on my keyboard and mouse when it starts to get nasty. |

Can the Pro keyboard (black) stand having a nice liquid bath to cleanse it from sticky keys and whatnot? Mine had Cranberry juice spilled on it which makes for a very sticky keyboard. I am unsure of what parts to take out and clean.

I've taken apart keyboards before and usually the keys all pop off and then you take the screws out that are in the bottom and then there's a lot of little screws inside that come out that hold on a metal backplate. Once that's off there's a pair of clear plastic sheets with contacts and traces on them for all the keys. Then there's usually a rubber pad and finally all the bottom parts of the keys.I usually leave the clear plastic sheets alone unless the traces have some forign substance in them, I'll use windex or something benign to clean them. You have to be careful not to scratch the traces. They're also usually connected to a little circuit board. Everything else you can soak in a bath of laundry soap overnight to loosen crud. Then scrub every little key and crevice with an old toothbrush. Then let dry on a towel and reassemble. Done. Like getting a new keyboard. |
