All iBooks will run panther (10.3)white iBooks will do 1024 by 768, but the other ones will only do 800 by 600. Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me, as they may believe i am biased, (and i may be), but i would reccommend AGAINST buying a white iBook. The reason for this is because a lot of them have quality problems, particularly with optical drives, motherboards, and case parts. If you do a bit of a look around in a lot of the big Mac forums, you'll find that a lot of people are having problems with these systems. And i've seen the three i've mentioned in person a lot, too, in the year and a bit that i did work experience at the local AppleCentre. If you can't get a TiBook or PB G3, get a clamshell iBook. They are just as fast as the iMacs from the equivelent eras, and don't feel fragile at all. I reckon i could throw one like a frisbee, and it'd probably still boot up. Also, the clamshell's dont suffer from the same quality problems as the white iBooks, and i haven't seen very many at all come in while i was at the Shop, other than for things like software problems and upgrades.Just my 2¢. We've had this argument before butIf you are buying new don't be put off buying a white iBook, if you have any kind of warranty don't worry about buying a white iBook. If you are buying second hand the toilet seat ones are a bargain at around 200-300 UKP here in Aus, I imagine closer to 500 AUD in the UK but be aware that it will be difficult to get any replacement batteries. Apple also have great deals on refurbished iBooks and IIRC isn't your wife studying some course? if so that would entitle here to an educational discount which would be worth checking out. Don't let the scare mongoring worry you the problems with iBooks are nothing like those with the PB 5300 and all in all the iBooks are great machines. -------- Apple ][e. Don't diss my PB 5300, it's what I officially call the Black Horizontal iPod. Within reason it goes to stand that if you treat something good, even crappy parts will respond better, while at the same time understanding the limitations of machines just as we accept personal limitations.

The only problem I would have with an iBook, the first generation, ESPECIALLY with Mac OS X (any version) would be the smaller screen.Iff'n you can find a green iBook, I would go with that. Most of the iBook SEs and those with firewire are the best IMHO. 466 MHz G3 is good, even for panther, and they've got firewire. Again, 800 by 600 isn't very desirable, but they're easy to tote and fun to look at (Personally, I still wouldn't mind having a key lime or indigo iBook, for use as a remote administration machine, or something like that) Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

They are really great replies & any arguing just makes it better cos then i get to clearly see the different arguments.I'm on 800x600 on my Quadra with a 15" monitor, & it is something I can live with, yes it could be better but it is workable. Will I be expecting to buy new batteries?, alot? shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive os 8.1 128 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" |

Amen to that bro! Though....I have succumbed to the lure of a 12" TiBook Not that the Pismo is to be chucked....heaven forfend! Rather...the Pismo is comin' home with me! (well I *do* have to work from home sometimes and my Beige G3 won't run 10.3 - the argument convinces me!) and the TiBook is the work machine. It's a hard life... What is pismo?
'Pismo' is the codename for the last of the G3 Powerbook Series (all helpfully officially called "Powerbook G3" hence the more common use of their codenames). It's the only one with firewire ports and is therefore also sometimes referred to as the G3 Powerbook Firewire (the previous one, 'Lombard' aka 'Bronze Keyboard', had usb and scsi ports; the one before that, 'Wallstreet', had scsi and serial ports. Not to be confused with the original G3 Powerbook 'Kanga' which won't run OSX at all.). IIR (this is from memory so I could be wrong!) it was available in two speeds: 400Mhz and 500Mhz, and came with either a DVD-ROM drive or a CD-ROM drive. The Pismo's family number (of which Apple are so fond!) is: (trys to type with Pismo upsidedown...) M7572. It originally came with OS 9.0.4 (at a time when all else was 9.0) and was nutoriously 'delicate'; since 9.1 the Pismo has become rock stable and unbelievably reliable. It's solidly built, can run on two batteries at a time, can use a VST etc. hot-swappable Zip drive in place of CD/DVD drive (or battery). The Lombard and Pismo, by dint of their built-in usb ports will run 10.3, the Wallstreet won't (officially). Though the Wallstreet runs 10.2 quite happily given shed loads of RAM. Hope that helps! (I actually typed this this morning, but didn't get to hit the reply button until here now, more than 14 hours later)the thinnest, blackest, firewirest of the PowerBook G3s. It has the capability for an airport card as well, IIRC. It came in 400 and 500MHz variants and shipped at the same time as the original TiBooks, along with some later rev. clamshell iBooks (like theo ne you're bidding on now) the screen resolutionis usually 1024 by 768, and from what I hear, the screens turn funny colors alot. when you're thinking about a quadram, 800 by 600 is huge. I used to run my quaddie on the AudioVision at 640 by 480, even 512 by 384 sometimes. Even 9.2.2 is usable at 512 by 384, but i could not ever imagine productively running OSX in anything less than 800 by 600 Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |
