I am looking into installing linux on one of my machines for the first time. I have a fairly basic knowlage of unix, so I think that I should be able to install it ok. I was wondering what versions all of you recommend, and where I can find them. Also have any of you ever installed the new YDL on a newer mac? I'm thinking of putting this on my G4 along with Panther.

Number One, you have the helm. I'll be in my ready room.

I played around with Debian 2.2 [it's on my 660av], and YDL [on a Beige G3]
but that's about all I know for linux…

If I open my window all the bugs will get in…That's just one more reason to use a Mac!

I am running a/ux on my aws95 just to play with unix myself. I figure its best to find an old version to learn from that doesnt have all the layers and addons that a new release would have. Basically you would be better off using the command prompt and figuring it out. The GUI of unix isnt much different from any other gui its just that things are in different places.

I have the terminal in OS X. But im not trying to learn it seriously or anything, I just want to try out the whole open source thing, and see how well it functions in normal computing. I want to surf the web check email, maybe play music and such, and I just kinda wanted to give Linux a try.
