Earlier on this afternoon, i:

Found my old 40 meg IDE drive
Took out the screws that hold the top on
Removed the top
Plugged it into the IDE bus on one of my P166s
Turned it on
Formatted it

...and then proceeded to install DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 and play around with it for a while while watching a hard drive work without the lid on!

Cool, but evil.

I really like to disassemble everything and have fun with the parts. The voice-coil head actuators use massively strong magnets. And sometimes the spindle motor has fun magnets. The platters make good wind-chimes.

I think you will find that the drive will work for a long time unless you dump some sand or a few hairs into it. Dont try this with a new drive because they are not as tolerant, dust will destroy it quickly.

LOL!

I should say that it would be ubercool if you did do the complete "transparent HDD hack" on that, you'd need to just cut a hole in the original cover, and put some clear stuff on it, and it'd be ubercool ;)

your house must not have much dust?

have many fun and long days staring into the fast rotating platters of old hard drives

I bet it drives your parentals crazy too!

a) My house has just as much dust as any other house

b) The key is to do it when they're not here.

The way I get the magnets off of the metal back plate is I use pliers to put sliding pressure on the magnet and then heat the back plate with a propane torch until the epoxy melts and the magnet slips. Then I separate the backplate from it as soon as possible before the heat kills the magnet. That way you just have the magnet without its back plate and it's way cooler and everything.

Huh? If what you're trying to say is does soaking them in alcohol work, then no. I tried it. The alcohol doesn't dissolve the epoxy. Heat is the only thing I found to work. Maybe gasoline would work, but that's a little too nasty.Go to Top of Page

I've found that lighter fluid does an nice job on the epoxy in some drives... It gums it up enough that you can get it off.

One of my good old ST-251 drives just became a victim of my boredom. Oh well, at least it didn't work (unless a thick, blue smoke is a side effect of it's operation...)
