I just bought what I hope will be 64 16Mb 30-pin SIMMS for 35 euros (that is including postage) on the local e-bay. It advertised 1 Gb worth of 16 Mb pins for Quadra "960" (sic). If things work out, I can max out my Q950 and si and manage to make a huge dent in our vacation costs by selling the rest. Have a look...

These e-bay auctions are often a draw of hat thought, as I have learned from experience. You don't always get what is advertized, and it can turn out to be expensive. I truly hope this is for real!

As I feared...
The fellow just wrote to me with his bank account data to transfer the money and mentioned that it is "just" 16 chips! I should have known better. Anyone who thinks that there is a Quadra 960 would probably think that all the banks maxed out are 1 Gb! Oh well, I should still be able to at least get my money back and still hold on to at least 8 (if not 12) of the chips. I will regard this as a lesson learned.

If he actually said it was 16MB sticks of RAM then you should be able to back out gracefully, there is a big difference between 16MB sticks and 16 chip sticks. eBay support should have some info on false descriptions, I'd deffinetly check it out.

What he actually said (translated from the German by me) was 1Gb Memory for Quadra 960 - 16 chip sticks. I will look into the false description section tonight. Thanks for the suggestion.

Any chance that its 1 GB of RAM in sixteen SIMMs of 64 MB each??? -- that would be cool.

Otherwise... total bummer dude.

I got in contact with the seller again. It seems he was selling the chips for a friend and has no idea about computer parts. He agreed to send me a Q950 motherboard with the 256 Mb of chips as a way of smoothing things over. The motherboard will probably collect dust here, but one never know if you need a spare. So the problem is settled.
Here is a "mod" question to go with this motherboard. A friend is offering me her old UMAX C500. I had a look at the size on the net - 4 x 13.75 x 16 with a 121 Watt power supply. I wonder if I could fit the Q950 in the case and drill holes in the back for the port sockets. Has anyone here done anything similar?
thanks,
muzhok

I was able to purchase eight 16M 30 pin SIMMs in two groups of 4 from different eBay sellers. They all turned out to be low-profile, so I used them to outfit both of my Quadra 700's with 68M each. One runs A/UX, the other Debian Linux.
