My win xp box keeps shutting down, it started a few hours ago, at first i ignored it because it already does this every so often.

I seems to be allowing me 5 mins or so of time online, then it reports a rpc error & must shut down, no explanation, no start up diagnostic.

Somthing which has happened is that a window opened up(computer is restariting will post rest later)

the window which opened up had msn netmeeting & i was put into a chat room, (one of those chat rooms where nobody speaks, contradiction in terms hey?) I managed to copy & paste the url & send a complaining email, but to the right people?

If I get a virus killer which one is a good one?

Go to www.grisoft.com and get yourself a copy of AVG. Its completely free, and it rocks. I use it on my Dell.

Thanks maclover

I have downloaded Norman virus control, my system seems to have settled down already though.

I shall check your link & bookmark it I think.

I wonder how many computers you blasted from the virus you had.

My xp box just stopped working, as far as the internet is concerned so I downloaded avg onto my840av, burned it to a cd & put it on the pc, where it killed "lastpage.b" & a "worm virus".

My pc is now not working properly though. I can dial up & my pc claims it is connected, but none of my programs can use the internet.

I have uninstalled & reinstalled everything that I can, ie:- my dialler, modem driver, IE.

any advice?

shaktiman,
having a similar problem on a machine in my network. It is winxp. I believe the former sys.admin reformatted the hard drive and just wrote over the previous win xp install. this machine has never really been "right." Scanning for viruses and everything comes up clean. Can go on the internet, but ANY search page (except metacrawler) errors out. As in, google, yahoo, etc, etc don't even appear. One types in google.com and a 404 comes up. Obviously google is not down, but this machine thinks it is. Any other regular site works (a.f.a.i.c.t.), but search pages do not work. I noticed that the main drive. . .what would normally be "c:" on a win system was named "e:." I reformatted the whole drives over again, got myself a "c:" and now everything is working fine. I know it sucks to reformat, but it is good for the soul every once in a while.

Yeah. It's a good idea to reinstall WinXP. I know it sucks, but sometimes it's the only answer. I'm about ready to reinstall w2k on my PC because it won't read the hosts file (for ad elimination purposes) and also I get BSOD every so often. I originally thought I was overdriving my PSU, which I probably was, but the 300 watt I've got in there now is doing the same thing, so it's probably about time to reinstall w2k. It didn't start until I switched cases. w2k HATES it when you swap things. I onced crashed a good install because I took out a hard drive without uninstalling the driver first.

Its an error from one of the recent Windows XP patches. You need to apply another patch to fix it. CMD.exe was left avaiable to anyome I recall.
