I would like that my performa 5260 (OS 8.6) and windows 98 machine could share same files with crossover cable. I had a usual cable (which I used to connect mac with the cable modem)I cut the cable and connected green wires with the orange ones and didn't do anything with brown or blue wires. (I hope it is right) I set up dave 2.5.2 and it almost worked: I could see through the windows network neighborhood my performa's network name and comment but couldn't browse the files though I had file sharing enabled in dave. But dave couldn't find the windows machine! I also tried pc maclan without any luck. Today I even set up ftp server in windows but the mac couldn't find it ether. First I thought the problem couldn't be in the cable because windows found the mac in network neighborhood but could this still be the crossover cable fault? |

For FTP to work each Mac/PC needs to have an IP Address within the same subnet. So if one uses 169.231.45.9 the other one should use 169.231.45.10 so that they can see each other. (Unsure if OS 8.6 automatically supplies an internal number)Best to manually enter each machine's Ip address.

Crossover cables require at least 4 wires cut and crossed. The relevant pins on an rj45 are: 1. tx+ 2. tx- 3. rx+ 6. rx-The cross-connections for a crossover cable are: tx+ to rx+ tx- to rx- rx+ to tx+ rx- to tx- I don't know what you shoudl do with the other 4 wires. G4From128k

As the Mac and PC are in different rooms I have to cut the cable because contact plug can't fit through to small hole in the wall. quote:

I set manually ip addresses as 192.162.0.1 and 192.162.0.2. Subnet was both 255.255.255.0 quote:

As I understand in here: http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00009.asp I just need to connected green wires with the orange ones. I also noticed that when I connected the cable both of the network adapters green light was always on or barely blinking. |

I think if you look closely at the instructions on that site, you will see that you need to cross the white-green and white-orange wires too. If this is what you did when you crossed the orange and green, then it should work.G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

When you terminated the cable, some of the wires probably weren't connected. You have to make sure that the wires go all the way in to the terminator and that you didn't cut the outer sheathing back past the end of the terminator. If it's not working, cut it and try again. It would also be a good idea to swap it with a known good cable since you don't have a cable tester. The Lightning Stalker Performa 631CD, 7.5.5 LC III Mail Server Q610 Q650 6400/180 40/1.6G/512k L2/enet/video-in/TV 7600/120 '604/233, 80/1.2G & 4G, 9.2.2 (Main Mac) Lady Smith Apples: Apple IIc 5.25" 2 Apple IIe |
