Ingredients:

One Pentium 166
1 Shitty VGA display
1 shitty old keyboard
1 Ipex mouse
2 or 3 cans of Coca-cola (or whatever other caffinated breverage you prefer)
1 Phillips screwdriver
1 Stereo
1 copy of Winamp on a CD "somewhere"
1 RCA to minijack (headphones type) patch cable

Step 1: Make sure the Coke is in the fridge and is ready
Step 2: Drag the PC adn peripherals upstairs
Step 3: Realise that your PC has a dead soundcard in it. Replace it with your SB16.
Step 4: Try and figure out how to get this install of Windows 95 to boot that you were sure worked fine. Have some caffiene when you're stuck.
Step 5: Try and find and then install your copy of Winamp on that CD.
Step 6: Install Winamp
Step 7: Fiddle around with your equipment and try and get the audio quality as good as possible
Step 8: Grab that other Coke, and a MacAddict
Step 9: Sit down and listen to some nice music. By now you've deserved it.

This morning was fun...very fun. This afternoon i'm fixing up all my old PCs....

A & W Floats float my boat.

PC's aren't good for much really. I find they run a few things that maybe you can't run on a Mac...but other than that, everything most folks think you can do on a PC but not on a Mac are in fact possible. With the mergence of Mac OS X, it's been Apple's savoir because all the cool UNIX stuff now comes to Mac..so we get to play with everything.

I have an extra P233MMX sitting here that I am pondering as to what I am going to do with it. I might make a quick and dirty hack with it and shove it and an ATX Power Supply in a little box and use it as a small backup server.

I'm more happy myself that I get to replace my Western Digital Caviar drive with 2 Seagagte 7200RPM Barracudas. The Western Digital brand is the worst you can buy...they are slow and so picky. I've seen so many die in my day it's a bad sign if you believe in omens. Running Xp, the hard disk thrashes like it's been running for a week and is totaly using the swap space. And that's right after boot. So moving to a SCSI system (and serving goodies at the same time to loving MLA members) is a good thing.

The one Barracuda goes in the 8600 and the 68 Pin one goes in the PC. The PC's name brand funny enough is "V8" which I am not sure if it relates to the popular drink or the car engine. Myself, I like the drink so it's gonna be V8 the drink. The weather here is now storms all the time so any case painting is put off untill I find a garage or an odd day with sunshine.

Step 1) write or download playlistable MP3 player for BeOS.
Step 2) load up MP3's (over an AppleTalk network!) and enjoy!

Be glad that you have a whole bunch of cool stuff to play around with at your house

and have fun!

2 or 3 cokes? I drink that much on my way back from the fridge.

After classes finish this fall I am going to build a flac/mp3/aac player. Wether I'll finish it or not remains to be seen.

Step one: get a big ol' PC and gut the *amned thing
Step two: Get an iPod, and stick it [attached to the Power adapter] inside the stinkin PC
Step three: get a 2.1 Computer speaker set and hook it to the iPod
Step Four: make holes on the side of the PC for the iPod and Speaker controls
Step Five: Enjoy

If I open my window all the bugs will get in…That's just one more reason to use a Mac!

a P120?

go to www.koha.org, find the sourceforge link, download and burn the bootable KOHACD ISO, and run it as a KOHA server. (especially helpful if you actually *have* a library which might need KOHA

or run NT4 and an old version of Offic eon it. Older machines can be especially useful as little computers on which to prepare quickie office documents, or great for use in the garage, or if cleaned well, and maybe the CPU hidden, you could use it in a kitchen... (Reciepe database maybe?)

Kitchen computer? Sounds like a Microsoft plan to use computers for cookbooks.

I'd rather stick to paper. Last thing I need is to be baking and put my gooey hands all over the monitor & keyboard/mouse. That would kill it quick enough, not to mention the insane heat from the ovena nd other elements.

I'm in the process of fixing our ten thousand dollar (US) server at work. Shitty reliability, I tell you. It up and dies after eight years of being up 24/7...

Thats not totally unrealistic for a vintage machine, we paid 5,000 for a Micron Mllenia Dual Pentium Pro 200 machine back in 1997. Came with 64 MB ram, ethernet, and a 4 GB scsi drive and a 12x CD running NT4. Great thing about buying the fastest thing around is its still usable even today, even if I did have to upgrade about every part but the motherboard. It's what I'm typing this on while I serve up webpages and listen to iTunes, all at the same time. Now its got 2 333's, 288MB ram, 40x CD, and 90 GB of SCSI over 5 HDs and Win2k Server.

I've always wanted to have dualie processors

Actually, Having a computer in the kitchen, IMHO wouldn't really be exactly like that. For one, you *should* have these thigns called washclothes and towels in your kitchen. Then it might come to your mind that there is these keyboards that are all membrane-bound (you'd have less accuracy and stuff when typing, but "yeah"

Then there's the thought that you are a pretty stupid person if you really would put your computer *right* next to your oven. But then again, you also might not be in a house with a decent sized kitchen (like ours) (IIRC, you live in an apartment, which would make me understand what your problem is with having a computer int he kitchen.

You mean like :gasp: the Baked TiBook?

Actually, what with the overntrays and the glayven, having a computer under the oven wouldn't be that much a bad idea (like, trays under the whole thing, where you usually store pans...)

Wait! I know - a PPC601 upgrade card, a NuBus sound card, and a AAUI transceiver to facilitate network transfer.

Far from it. This machine has no NuBus slots, and it already has 10BaseT ethernet.
