Hi all!

Great relief to find that I'm not the only weirdo who can't bear to see an old mac get trashed! Didn't actually use a mac until 1994 when I got an LC475 at work, but I've been making up for it since, and now I work as a mac technician. The really cool thing about being a mac technician is a) fixing people's macs and seeing them smile again and b) getting given lots of cast offs!

My collection to date (all working!) is: Mac Plus, SE, SE/FDHD, SE/30, Classic, Classic II, Color Classic, LC475, Quadra 660AV, Powerbook 520, 6100, Powerbook 5300cs*, Powerbook G3 (Wallstreet), Beige G3 Tower, Powerbook G3 (Pismo), Bondi Blue iMac.

* the 5300cs doesn't actually have its LCD attached owing to suffering from the broken hinge problem, but it has a Focus Lapis PDS card in and works well as a compact desktop!

They run Systems from 6.0.7 to 10.2.8. Some (like the 6100 and SE/30) I have several of! Not all 68k machines, obviously, but it has to be said there's a certain delight in booting up a silent Plus and, boing, it's up an running in *seconds*, that's just not there with the later machines! Still searching for those elusive oldies: the Mac, Apple II and, the Holy Grail....a Lisa!

Cheers
Alcina

... and you have been liberated, spiritually, you now know that there are other people like you, and that most of us congregate here.

Welcome, to the 68k Macintosh Liberation Army!

(I've always wanted to say that to someone who has come here)

Nice to hear about your varied collection, and your lighthearted, almost humorful viewpoint on things

I think you'll like it around here

That is a good collection. I don't have enough room for the amount of Macs I want to have. :/

Welcome to the barracks Alcina! Good to see you. I've been a little absent from the forums lately what with my own stuff, but I'll be trying to poke back in from time to time to add my own blend of wisdom and insanity.

If it's any consolation the hard drive in the Powerbook 520 has just died! :( Actually....that's the 4th hard drive I've had fail in as many weeks...getting worried :(

The Wallstreet (it's the nobbled one with the crappy 12" passive screen) was chucked out a year ago because it "just isn't fast enough". Can you believe it! Souped it up with the Pismo's old memory and hard drive when I upgraded it, now it runs 10.2.8 quite happily. Plenty fast enough for me, though I admit the screen is sometimes a struggle! It's connecting wirelessly using a Buffalo "extreme" card. The 520 belonged to someone who upgraded to an iBook and asked if I wanted her old laptop "to play with" (I have my staff well trained!) The 5300cs was chucked out because of the broken hinge. (you can see it at: http://www.alcina.org/5300 ) The Pismo is *mine* :)

The machines currently being chucked out are Performa 630s (I think there must be a factory still making these somewhere...) and, incredible as it may seem, Beige G3s. I've had 3 in the last month - all moved on to good homes (usually upgrading a previous cast-off!).

Welcome to the 68kMLA, Alcina!

As for a factory still making Performa 630s, i'm not sure about that, but i do believe all those Windohze sysadmins who reckon there's probably still a factory some where that churns out LCIIs...there's definately no shortage of 'em! Even though i only have one...the PAF won't let me have multiple Macs of the same model. Enjoy your stay.

I feel sorry for y'all who are *TRYING* to ram those square pegs into round holes. I got my first one to five years ago, and they've been going in well for the whole time since.

Other than that, nice DT5300, I did that long ago with a Compaq Contura (old PC laptop) it was only a 386, but it ran Win3.1 and DOS pertty well

I've been meaning to get an older amc laptop to do that on.

I'm interested in the Lapis Card; I've got the one with Ethernet, but I can't get it to pick up an IP address from my router. Running OS 8.1.

Hmm...I don't dhcp with it - I have a manually assigned IP - and it works just fine in that mode.

Incidentally, pegs and holes and squares and orifices aren't exactly my specialty.

I'm great with the tech stuff though

I'm also pretty good at making up words

My collection is constantly changing. I fix them up and give them good homes. Right now I am trying to get a Daystar 601 card to work in my 638 CD. I am going to put a 64 meg memory chip in it and then load 9.1 OS just for the hell of it. The idea is to have a Quadra maxxed out ...it sorta has feets. :)

Sort of, but not quite...they're not full feets...just bulges that look like feets.

The term, is "Mamallian Protuberances"

I rather like the term, and it was invented for the DuoDock, one of the first macsw ever to use them, because it was one of the first macs to follow (somewhat unsuccessfully, I might add) the newer design language "Espresso"

Many other mixed designs, between snow white and Espresso, have been done, much more successfully.

That reminds me to try to finda copy of AppleDesign that I can keep
