Currently ebaying for some stuff, but wanted to check here too. Looking for some innards for my newly rescued wounded 8500. Particularly:

-168-pin DIMM DRAM (preferably 128mb sticks, but any will do for now)
-2 x 1 MB VRAM sticks (32-bit, 112-pin FPM, 70 nsec or faster)
-Processor Upgrade cards (g3. . .g4 would be a dream)
-PCI cards (vid, 10/100, USB)
-SCSI HD (2gb +)

Interested in getting this thing back up. Already have some VRAM on its way, but I want to go to 4mb. . .or just use a PCI vid card. Will need RAM and HD to determine further issues with this. If that does not work, I will need a new mobo.

. . .if one puts a PCI vid card, do the VRAM sticks become useless, or does the machine still use em?

The vram is used both for the built in video, and for the built in video capture ports (think it does video out to the tv also)

4 MB VRAM will let you both go to millions of colors at higher resolutions and use a TV as a second monitor. With only 2 MB, the 8500 is limited in color depth and can only support mirroring to the TV out port.

BTW, Have you thought about waiting patiently for another 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 class machine to fall into your lap? You seem to be pretty adept at finding machines. It might be a cheap way to get some of the parts you need to test the functioning of your 8500.

On the other hand, if you want it now, you want it now and I can surely understand that!

g4, you are definately right about waiting for some stuff. but even though macs seem to be falling from the sky and landing in my garage, I feel lucky to score this 8500. Now I have 3 macs that can do video, and for my installation artwork, that is crucial! So I will wait (a bit!) for the processor upgrade, but I need ram, and a vid card.

by the way, I did get the 8500 up and running! I captured some video, but it was slightly choppy with the 2mb of Vram, but it was still beautiful!!! probably gonna get something PCI to stand in for the video, BUT, I am still unclear as to the implications of this.
unknown, you say it is used for the vid capture and such, BUT does the vram become obsolete if there is a video card installed? Or is it cumulative, i.e I have a 16mb video card + 4mb VRAM, do I then have 20mb vram?

A PCI grafix card will allow you to connect a 2nd monitor. It doesn't 'add' VRAM to the motherboard nor does it 'obsolete' onboard VRAM.

However.... this is my theory..... if you plug in a 16MB PCI card with monitor, have no monitor on the internal grafix, then that would leave ALL the 4MB VRAM available for video capture (as opposed to using the 4MB for capture I/O and running a monitor)

??? well that's my theory - can anyone verify this?

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation.

I think it just switches to tv output mode

I think Unknown_K is saying that the 4 MB VRAM is for providing TV output. (His comment is inside the Quote, just below Flash's question)

I'm inclined to think that the 8500's VRAM is only used for output amd not ever used for video capture. I base this on the fact that the Technical Information booklet that came with the 8500 says that the 2 MB VRAM configuration will support 1152 x 870 with Thousands of colors. That display format would use 1.91 MB of the 2 MB VRAM capacity. Yet there is no asterisk suggesting that you can't do video capture while the VRAM is monopolized by the display.

I could be wrong, however.

BTW, you might find http://www36.pair.com/~macula/mac8500-l/optimizing_video.html useful for tips on getting the best video capture performance.
