Depends how good the condition is, really. I probably wouldn't pay any more than US$20 for it."**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

I wouldnt pick up a brown c64 period. A c64C (same styling as a c128) should be around $35 with a 1541c drive and maybe some software. The monitor might have made the $40 system worth it because they go for at least $20 for the 1701/2 and $45+ for an amiga style 1804/s.Who in this day and age uses a cassete tape on a c64? Bad enough having to wait on the disk drive without a speed cart

If it had a floppy drive and some software, perhaps. But not with the tape drive alone.Given enough time, I could find the parts for such a C64 for less than $40 Canadian (say two months). Given even more time, I could find such a system for free (say six months to a year).

It all comes down to what your time hunting for the parts is worth ( along with gas money to pick them up or shipping charges), and wether you have to have it now or can wait. I spend time researching what I need/want and then just waiting for a good deal for the correct equipment. Every month or so I find an item on my list and grab it. Its alot cheaper building a collection like then just buying the first thing you see without knowing what is needed to get it running. You also have to know how to dig out the accesories and software to make your new aquisition usefull.
Example: I new that I wanted an scsi card for my IIgs and one day I seen a cheap 44mb syquest drive plus 10 carts for next to nothing so I got it. 6 months later I found a scsi card for the system $40 shipped but needed a C rev rom so I got it. A week later I had a C rom for free shipped to me. Somebody had a joystick and 1mb memory card for free for the system a year ago just for shipping so I got that too. The system itself was dirt cheap from somebody just wanting to unload it on lowendmac.com swaplist. Having alot of extra parts around helps (like keeping a 120mb drive that used to be in my q950 as a boot drive) and having a external case the exact same size and type as the one the syquest 44 external was in. I also swapped the centronic connection on my external DAT drive for the 50pin HD scsi on the extra case so all the drives for the 2gs were centronic interfaced (got cables and terminators cheap). All I need now is a cheap cd-300 and that system is done (well maybe a 4mb ram card but really dont need that for gaming) I have quite a bit of early mac software from people just looking to get rid of it (just pay media rate shipping).
Both my c128 and c64c (plus drives) were pretty cheap on ebay (and mint condition too). If your going to get a c64 get an extra 1541 drive with xe1541 cable so you can connect it to a PC and transfer images directly to disks so you have some games to play.

thanks for the info. i don't think it came with any carts for the tape drive, but the keyboard and the tape drive were in the original boxes. overall it was in OK shape (plastics were a little faded and scratched)

I used to have a c64 or 128 or something. It didn't even have the tape drive or anything. I ended up scrapping the box and saving the monitor. It has a nice RCA video input. Thinking back, I probably should've saved it for a uIP web server or something. The Lightning Stalker Performa 631CD, 7.5.5 LC III Mail Server Q610 Q650 6400/180 40/1.6G/512k L2/enet/video-in/TV 7600/120 '604/233, 80/1.2G & 4G, 9.2.2 (Main Mac) Lady Smith Apples: Apple IIc 5.25" 2 Apple IIe |
