i found an SE/30 that was unloved, so i took it home and took it apart to see if there were any salvagable parts. it has an SE motherboard. everything else is SE/30, but the motherboard is definatly not. it has a 68000P8 chip, as well as a chip made by "VSLI" that w/o closer inspection looks like the main chip. very wierd. but it works anyways :D |

The VLSI chips are custom chips. In general, it means Very Large Scale Integration and refers to the number of transistors on the chip. In this case, I think VLSI is also the company name.Sorry to hear that you got an SE. The same thing happened to me. I exchanged it with the dealer -- even though it was sold as-is. They refused at first, but I claimed that it was sold under false pretense and I would complain to the BBB. Clearly you shouldn't do this if your know the dealer is honest. I had done it in that case because I specifically wanted the SE/30 mainboard to upgrade an SE. (Everything else could have been missing and I wouldn't have cared, because they didn't make a claim that it was intact nor functional. They simply claimed that it was an SE/30, which it wasn't.) BTW - it wasn't the mainboard that tipped me off, it was the signatures inside of the case! Edited by - MacTO on 14 Oct 2003 19:04:47 |

The ROM slot was there so that later on if Apple released a ROM update, you could put the update into that slot. And yes, SE/30s do have a good number of RAM slots. Just don't tell Steve Jobs...he might issue a recall. SE/30s have ROM SIMMs. So the ROM slot should be filled with a SIMM. If it isn't, the machine shouldn't work.No upgrade ROMs were ever made. But if you can find a rare IIsi or IIfx ROM SIMM, you can put it in the SE/30 and thereby make the SE/30 32-bit clean in hardware, which allows it to address more RAM and is generally hackalicious. A/UX doesn't care about the ROM - it should run just fine on a "dirty" Mac. Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert Macs Liberated: SE (2), LC, IIsi, PB 145b, Quadra 700 (2), LC 575, 6100 (2), PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |
