What's the largest HFS/HFS+ partition you can get away with under 7.1? Is there a set # or are we going to hear varying personal experiences? Would a version of 7.5.x let you go larger, as in, did the later system have better scsi drivers? I'd rather not go all the way to 8.0.

I ask because I'm in the market for a good size scsi hard drive, and on eBay I see mainly 2 gig, 4 gig, 9.1 gig and 18 gig. 4 seems about right, but 9 would be awesome. Apple shipped 4 gig drives, so I assume you can have a 4 gig partition? 9 seems awfully large. Recently danamania posted his troubles regarding partitions, but it seems that his drive was a little wacky.

HFS+ is out of the question, since that requires Mac OS 8.1.

The maximum partition size is 2 GB for System 6 and 7; 4 GB for System 7.5, and 2 TB for System 7.5.2 and higher.

The maximum number of volumes is 173, so basically, any Mac can handle any hard drive ever made.

I could not get an HFS volume to go over two gigabytes under 8.1 when I tried it. HFS+ worked just fine though. I also heard somewhere that the max partition size under HFS+ was 100 gigabytes but I don't know how accurate that was.

Did you forget to turn off automatic updates in the Software Update control panel?
