Nope!

Because it's a PDS slot! It requires a right angle adapter with the NuBus Bridge chipset on it.

What Trash80 said!

And to add a little more - to use a PDS slot based PPC603e card in the Q610 (like mine came with) it needs... a right angle adapter again!. Just a different one. Or run the thing with no case and a huge ol' card with heatsink poking up straight out of it.

or we could do it the cheap way, and build a new 6100Hat, and make it hold more drives, and support more PDS/NuBus Slots...

/me imagines 6100Router with many PDS NuBus Slots...

I'd also like to see a 6100 with UberDremeled case so's a processor could just stick out

I'm hacking two 6100 cases, one on top of another, to house my other G3. Looks pretty sweet, t'would hold a lot more if the Beige mobo and PSU didn't take up so much room.

Whoa -- there was a 603e PDS card made for the 610?!? I thought the only PPC upgrades for a 610 were (A) the 66MHz and 100MHz PPC601-based Apple/DayStar/Sonnet cards, or (B) a 6100 mobo/backplane swap.

Please provide details (and pics if possible)!

gah! bad BAD typo on my part.

I'd been talking about 6200 and 6300s all day, and the PPC603e just slid right off my fingers as easily as you can say quadraquadraquadra

I did mean the 100MHz PPC 601 (yes. get it right dana... 601 601 601 ) card.

Hey, cool. Thanks. But that doesn't look like any PDS slot I've ever seen before.

Gah. I lied TWICE in that first original message!

ok to correct myself again... no you couldn't just plug an accelerator straight into the 610s slot cos it's a different form to a normal PDS slot. But the adapter with my PPC accelerator certainly turns it into a normal 040 PDS slot =)

I might just go paint all my macs black and collect dells or something. whaa. not going too well today!

But for those who haven't seen both machines, http://www.applefritter.com/boards/motherboards/quadra610/q610-front.jpg is a Quadra 610 motherboard with that non-pds-connector-pds-slot in the brown on the far left next to the 040 and http://www.applefritter.com/boards/motherboards/quadra700/q700-front.jpg is a Quadra 700 motherboard with the usual everyday pds connector pds slot in black at the top left. Don't listen to my lies!

So then does that PDS "converter" card that plugs in there have any electronics on it or does it just rewire the socket to a normal PDS slot?Go to Top of Page

You're talking about the one that converts the PPC PDS to the '040 PDS, right? It probably does, but i'm not sure. I'd say it'd probably need some electronics though, to convert between the two different systems.

Absolutely no electronics at all (I have it in front of me! bwahaha. I should have scanned it with the 610 actually... and thought I did)

It's a green board about 7-8 inches long, and barely 2 inches high. the lower connector goes into that 610 slot (obviously!) and the sideways connector had a normal old 040 PDS slot connector. The traces on the board seem to mostly go straight up, too - not much jumping around I can see.

And I put the scanner away just last night. dang! looks like I'll be dragging it out again today :)

Slightly OT:

Y'know, it is a shame that you can't get adapters that let you plug a PPC PDS card into an '040...i have a spare AV card that would LOVE to find a new home in my Q700...

Sounds like Apple is being pretty communist again rewiring the PDS slot and then making you buy a converter to get it back so you can use it. Go to Top of Page

I can imagine those custom cases with CPU boards sticking up out of the cas elike those old Chevies and cars that had thier engines sticking up out of the hood.

Real racer breed.

I'll agree with you on principal, cos apple are just like that :)

However the 040 connector is a pretty crappy strength connector in a physical sense IMHO - the PCI style (like the 610s motherboard has) is a much hardier socket, which makes sense for something that'll have the physics of a shallow L plugged into it, either as nubus OR PDS slot. The case does physically support the card+adapter to some degree, but not entirely. Due to the funky pizza shape of the case the adapter was needed anyway - the 6100 PDS slot is definitely the same as an 8100 or 7100 PDS slot, I've run an AV card in it standing up out of the case - gotta have the adapter to make it all fit whether the slots are the same or not.

(you prolly knew all that but I'm just in the mood to type lots of irrelevant opinions about outdated beigemacs :)

The sad part of it all is that, in the PC world, slimline cases had the same riser card setup with up to 5 standardized slots on it, Bays for several 3.5" devices, AT LEAST one 5.25" bay and several times the power and cooling budget Apple's machines. While Apple couldn't even keep their 030 PDS slots compatible with each other!
