 Second harddrive for an LC575?

I've taken an LC575 and upgraded the ram to 12 meg. Swapped
the 'LC040 processor for the full 68040. Put in a network
card and swapped the original internal HD for a 500 meg one.
And installed OpenBSD on it. It is beautiful to just look
at now d:)

But I've now got a spare internal HD sitting around, the
orignal 256 meg one. Is there any way I can reinstall it,
internally or externally, and have two disks on the machine?

Good to see another unixy old mac :D

The main things that could stop you is whether the drive would fit inside the case, and whether the power supply of the 575 could handle the extra drive. I think they have 40w drives... and a couple of the older 80mb drives I have use 8w each...

If the above aren't a problem, then setting the scsi ID of each drive to a different number (and different to the CDROM also) is pretty easy - then you'd need a scsi cable with another connector on it to hook the drive up, and possibly a Y-adaptor for the power plug.

Externally, if you can find an old cheap case that was used on say, a mac plus, it can power a bigger drive, and plugging it into the external scsi port gives you the drive straight away :D.

I'm gonna beat maclover5 to the punchline this time, I'm dyin' to see a 575 variation on his hackintosh theme!

The old drive (if original) is probably a watt-hog, another larger, newer drive with better table manners would probably be better for internal use if ml5's external solution doesn't really work on your machine

Well after some fiddling with screwdrivers and a handsaw the
bits of plastic that prevented the second drive from fitting
inside are gone. I just need the scsi cable and the Y adaptor -
and I know the place to get them too, which helps.

As an aside, the box is currently struggling valiantly to
recompile the bsd kernel - which takes about 2 hours on
the '040 at 33Mhz.Go to Top of Page

Hmm....

*looks at LC 5xx service manual*

Sorry mate, but i don't think you can do it. That SCSI cable in there does not have standard internal SCSI connectors. The connectors are a special type that the drives slot into. Granted, it may be possible to do if you remove the connectors from the old cable and put them on the new cable, but there are no gurrantees as to whether it will work or not. Unfortunately, this means that the only way to have more than one drive on your 520 is an external SCSI drive case.

the "slot" connectors are an adaptor that plugs into a real SCSI connector and power connector, a new SCSI cable and a power splitter should do it if your power supply is up to the task of powering both hard drives. also, you could probably put another hard drive in as a direct raplacement for the cD drive. This would work even better if you have a machine with the bezel that hasn't got the CD tray opening cut out.

Yeah. Thats probably the only way to do it. But then you lose your CD ROM.

I posted about putting the second drive in where the CD used to be in the Hacks forum a while ago. I did it with a PowerMac 5400, but it should work the same way on any all-in-one Mac with the special CD drive connector.

Yeah. No reason why it wouldn't.
