..but a liberation just the same. Today I brought home a 486DX-33 mini-tower from a garage sale for $5.00. It's a butt ugly thing with 3 1/2", 5 1/4", 4x CD-ROM, 2 - 200MB drives, Sound Blaster 16, and 16MB of RAM. It has (horrors!) Windows 3.1 on it with as of yet unknown applications installed. Needless to say, I've swapped out the hard disks and I'm installing Debian on it as I speak. I bought it for a couple of reasons. 1) I have a couple of large IDE disks lying around that I want to make use of and I don't have an IDE based Mac handy. 2) It's a piece of computing history like any other 10yr+ computer. It was unwanted, and certainly underutilized and deserved to be rescued. Who knows, perhaps I can turn it into a 100Gb streaming MP3 server. :-) Besides, I can think of no other forum to which to post of this find. All i can say is good luck getting any drives bigger than....about 2 gigs working with it. Pentium 1s often had an 8 gig limit in the BIOS, but i reckon a 486 would have an even smaller limit."**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

You have everything you need to run dos games. If your really bored get a copy of Desqview/x so you can run xclient apps from a mac running a/ux. Thats what I am going to do since I just installed a/ux 3.1 on my q950/aws and have desqv/x on a 386/40 under my desk here. I just need to get my network up to try it.

Using Maxtor's MaxBlast software, I'm able to get Debian to recognize the 40GB drive, though I'm having a bit of a time getting the NIC recognized. Time to start playing around with IRQ's I guess. This machine really takes me back. I remember buying my first new computer (a 486-SX 25) with my own cash (though I had owned several computers before but with "parent assisted" funding). Ironically, within about 6 months I had traded it with someone for a Mac SE. :-) I later got a job where I built machines just like this one. It was at the very start of the Pentium era. The first Pentium 60/66's where absolute monsters with wicked cooling issues, not to mention the infamous floating point bug. heh

itsno; yea this is, but, sometimes people liberate other things [PPCs, and once in a while non-mac stuff!, which I don't belive in… I'd be fine, that is, if it weren't windoz stuff… although this is x86 based, he IS loading Linux on it so… I guess it's kinda ok…If I open my window all the bugs will get in…That's just one more reason to use a Mac! As long as you have *nix on it, it's ok. < There is no text to preview ! > "Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005' Cannot open database ''. It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt. /68kmla/inc_top.asp, line 75"

Windows is OK in my book, NT4 would run on it, NT 3.5 would run great Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

NT4 on a DX33? i dont think so. Even windows 95 struggles. Though on the plus side, it does have 16mb (30pin SIMMS? or 72pin) so that could be maxed out.I've tried to install NT4 on a P133 with 48mb and it was on its knees begging for water and gasping for air. I removed it and installed Redhat and then it could stand up on its own two feet (and run the Quake2 server that I wanted :P) I think $5 is great, just for the parts :)

heh, I ran NT4 on my DX2 (66MHz) just fine, NT 3.51 should run as well though, unless you want to try 95/NT4 or a *nix on it. I ran a linux on my machine, and noted that linux wasn't performing as well, in my opinion, as NT was. (I also knew how to do more with NT )Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

NT 3.51 reminded me on windows 3.1 but more stable, should run fine on a 486/66 with enoughy memory.
