Hi, whats a simple way to transfer text files between a mac (powerbook 180c) to a PC that doesnt involve floppy disks.Your assistant is greatly appreciated. Good ideas usually are created by crazy people, go figure... |

A null modem cable lashup and communications/file transfer software on both ends, but it'd be probably be a lot easier to use a printer cable (a null modem cable, coincidentally) to set up Appletalk between the 180c and a Mac that can do the floppy file transfer from the PC.jt ™. If you have an AppleWorks5 CD, you could probably terminal between them and use AppleWorks' file transfer mechanisms...Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

I can't recall if the 180 came with ethernet or not. If it did, plug that into a hub or use a crossover cable and you can just use the network to transfer files. (ie; via TCP/IP)BoJ

with a 180, you can add SCSI ethernet ;)you might be able to do TCP/IP over the serial cable (MacIP) especially if you have an ethernet mac to act as a router, or PC software to do that for you ( or mac emulation on the PC?) SCSI.... hmmm.My PB520c allows me to use the PB hard disk as if it were an external SCSI disk for use on something else, but it needs an adapter to do that. Mac+=4, MacSE=1, MacSE30=2, P400=1, PB520c=1, Q650=1, UberQ950=1, Performa All-in-One=TBD PM7500=SQRT(-1) |

I have that adaptor, and can confirm that my PowerBook 100 will allow you to do that other than that though, my PB100 doesn't work Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

Well, when I used to do this, I did it as per Gamba's site recommends. I used ZTerm on the Mac and HyperTerminal on the PC and it worked quite nicely. The only thing I ran into with this is that when I first tried it, I used my Toshiba laptop and I guess the serial port is "weak" or something because it just got a lot of CRC errors and timed out. Hopefully the 180c will have a decent serial port, but make sure you're using a desktop for the PC if and when you do this. Serial ports vary widely in quality. The Lightning Stalker Performa 631CD, 7.5.5 LC III Mail Server Q610 Q650 6400/180 40/1.6G/512k L2/enet/video-in/TV 7600/120 '604/233, 80/1.2G & 4G, 9.2.2 (Main Mac) Lady Smith Apples: Apple IIc 5.25" 2 Apple IIe |

yeah, IIRC, you can transfer just about anything that way as well, so if y'all begin downloading files, you can put them on the 180 Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

P.S. I hope you're handy with a soldering iron. I had to make my Mac serial to DB-25 converter myself. I sacrificed a Mac modem cable for the serial connector and soldered it onto the DB-25 connector I got from RadioShack using the pinouts from Gamba's website. I then tested it to make sure it worked *before* encasing it in epoxy. Then when I was sure it was working, I applied enough epoxy to cover all the solder joints except the sheilding. Then I wrapped a piece of aluminum foil around the mess for some extra sheilding, making sure it wasn't touching the wires and that it was touching the sell of the Mac serial connector and the DB-25 connector. Then I let it cure. To top things off, I put on another coating of epoxy. In case you decide to do this, a good epoxy is one that hardens rigid and has little to no shrinkage/growage while it cures. I used SuperPoxy in the yellow syringe. |
