Hey all!

Well... I did it, I finally got into a band. Of course, no one in the band can play guitar so the task of learning that fell upon me. So, are there any decent (read: free) guitar lessons on the web?

Dan Smith's acoustic guitar site is the best out there for the basics.

As for solos and such, listen to all the early Santana you can get your hands on. It's simple, melodic, and it makes good harmonic sense.

And remember that no guitarist is complete without a good working knowledge of Wes Montgomery! And figuring out Bird solos is always good for the chops.

Last but not least, LEARN TO READ! If you want any gig that pays anything, you'll either have to learn every tune anyone will ever call, or you'll have to be able to read. The first time a piano player or a horn hands you a piece of sheet music and you don't know how to read it, you'll get either a) a drumstick thrown at you, b) kicked off the stand, or c) both. It happened to me once, and that was plenty of incentive to learn to read.
