I really love this forum as it has helped me bring a lot of old hardware back to life. But here is a really tough nut to crack. I was given a Quantum XP34300 4.3Gb hard disk a while back and it would be great to use in my recently acquired q650. The problem is that the drive has a very loud and constant high pitch whine. I am not talking about the clickety clack that some drives give out when they are in search mode - this drive gives out a whine that I just can't stand. I have looked up the drive's specs (http://www.megasat.ch/totalhardware/h/txt/3656.txt) and it really shouldn't be any louder than other drives that I have (it has an acoustic rating of 36 dBA). Is there somewhere I can find about how to take these drives apart or do something about it. A real shame just to throw it away! Thanks.

I'm sorry to say that this noise is caused by wornout bearings, and that the motor assembly is sealed. There is no practical way to relubricate them. So, as your original post suggests, the only real alternative (aside from replacement) is earplugs, or very loud background music. Metallica at 140dB will do the job nicely...

Tombe Pour Elle - By Pascal Obispo... Very good french music, I don't understand a word of it (other than the title, which means something like "to fall for you" but it's cool to listen to...)

also
Omnibus - by Lautsprecher... This german trance/dance/house song works very good at loud volumes, and it probably goes even faster than your hdd...
