Just got a Q650 yesterday and already updated my memory to 40 Mb (1x16, 1x4, 2x8 and the 4 soldered on board). The box doesn't come with a CD-Rom Drive and I was hoping to install one later as they are pretty cheap to come by, BUT I just looked in the 650 manual on Gamba's page and noticed that I need something called "CD Carrier Rails". Are these really necessary? Is there a DIYS way around this problem? (i.e. the hard drive in my Q950 is attached with twist ties since the HD cage is filled with a CD drive). I really don't want to spend any money on rails, as the box only cost 2.50 and exotic spare parts like this and the cd bezel usually cost way more than the whole box. Thanks for any tips. |

Try blu-tak. That sometimes does it. "**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

THe CD rails keep the drive from wiggling around in the case - old PCs used to use a similar type of rail system to allow you to easily remove drives from the case. The CD bezel is relatively expensive and hard to find. I never could find one that fit snugly. The outside edge was always loose

If you can't find a CD bezel, try picking up a 7100 with an internal CD-ROM, or a junk 7100 case with the CD bezel...a lot of 7100s came with internal tray load drives."**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

I just used pieces of foam to keep the CD in position (I never got the CD bezel either) Worked OK for me - just didn't look too pretty.- - - - - - - - - - - - - A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation. 68k ParaMedic |

LOL, I had a performa 600, and had the exact opposite problem as you, I had the rails, but didn't want the cd drive in that computer, I ended up putting some weird scsi 5 1/4" thing on it... a SyQuest IIRC...Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |
