Well, last night the first hint of troubles came. The Battery pack in my grandad's laptop started to die. Then today total system failure. It's past the warranty and now the laptop is sitting there dead. When I turn the power button on it's makes some weird noises out of speakers then dies, and won't respond to AC power only Battery.

So, this means I have to shell out 250 bucks for a worthless laptop that now is dead. (He paid for it and was to come pick it up.)

Sigh....

I have it all part right now and so far no sign of anything wrong. Oh well, I guess someone who needs parts will have access to a good scrapbook. Maybe I can push 100 for parts, but doubtfull even if that.

I hate PC's.

It's not him. It's this stupid forum. It's happened to me before. The forum will hiccup sometimes and post 2 or 3 times.

The 5300 is not the machine for him. He is very picky. The 5300 would drive him insane. Besides, I don't have a battery for it, so I would still be out 200 bucks to get a battery for it.

It's just downright sucks. And laptops usually don't come back to life when they sputter in death. Usually...

A clamshell iBook SE/466 is the way to go iThink. Clamshell iBooks are extremely sturdy (I reckon i could throw one like a frisbee and it'd probably still boot up), and a 466 Mhz G3 will provide plenty of grunt for his needs, and run OS X nicely.

Really, I don't see why you should have to pay for it seeing as it doesn't sound like it was your fault, and had it not died when you started using it it would have when he started using it. Actually if you choose the laptop for him then I guess it would be your fault for choosing a lemon, either way perhaps you could put it down to bad luck and reach some kind of compromise.

you didn't say what it was or even if it was a mac but a 5300 should be well under 100 usd, the much better 1400 and 300 usd should get a clamshell ibook.

I would discuss what you are going to do before shelling out 250 for what you describe as a worthless laptop.
