Well, Classic Mack is gonna be coming home! (The name comes from the movie Entrapment, Sean Connery played in it)I got it on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2753243157 It's just the logic board, stick in a power supply, RAM and a drive and I am set to go. Not bad eh? Just need to find some IDE drives and a power supply. |

Cool! For the PSU, you can use an iMac PSU if you want, but an even better option would be to use an ATX power supply. Either way, have fun!"**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 Edited by - maclover5 on 17 Sep 2003 15:51:29 |

I have been reading up the various hacks people have done, from rack mounting, custom cases etc.I am going to use a standard ATX Power supply, I just need to find a dead iMac PSU and retrieve the plastic connector since it's a custom job. I can then splice wires. I'm not going to go fancy or gung ho over this, but get something reasonable setup. I think I will let my 8600 run Mac OS X 1.1 Server to do my web stuff, and then my iMac can do all my recent stuff. Btw, can an iMac of this calibre do DVD? I used to own one of these, and I know it sucked at doing Divx but I wonder if DVD will work if I have a DVD drive hooked up. Any ideas? I will go shopping for a case soon, I was actually going to see maybe if one of those Shuttle cases would fit for the iMac LG Board. Or see what else I can get my hands on. I know a place where I can get iMac parts like PSU connectors etc. Which reminds me, Oh no. I lost it. I hate when that happens.

I'm not sure if a mac of that calibur could do DVD, first you'd need a DVD drive, and then you'd either need to decode it, I'm not sure if the 266MHz G3 is fast enough for that...Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

I reckon that if you installed a Sonnet HARMONi, which will give you a 500 Mhz G3 and a FW port, as well as a FireWire or IDE DVD drive, you may have a chance, because of the faster G3.Btw, you know that that logic board doesn't have a CPU, right? Yep. I know. 86 bucks (which is what the total came to) is a lot cheaper than buying it elsewhere etc etc etc. Like for a used iMac they want around 500 Canadian sometimes as much as 800 (they would be DV's at that price range) And I really don't need all the crap they will pack with them like fancy keyboards, mice etc.I can locate G3 CPU's on the cheap and RAM is cheap these days so I'm only looking at like another 100 or 150 dollars and I have an almost fully loaded G3 system because IDE drives and CD's, I can get them next to nothing as well. :) Depending on how much this one guy charges, I might have him convert my iMac into a rackmount. http://imac.pointinspace.com/ he did an awesome project to make iMac Rack Mounts and I think that would serve me well. Now, on towards my hunt for a Apple CPU. :)

since the iMac G3 early revisions are bastardized laptops in a candy box, you'll have a job finding the processor for it. not to discourage you, but it aint your everyday ZIF chip...CCC Commander Promotion: 19 Mar 2003 13:06:30 68k Macs Rescued: 2 Pluses, a 512KE, a Classic II, a Q650, a Q660AV, an SE/30, and a MacII Contraband rescued: Power Computing PowerBase 200, a PM 8600/300, and a PM8500/180 Apple //s rescued: Apple //e |

These things may not use regular G3 ZIFs but the chips are still fairly common. Also as it is a hacked up laptop you should hack on a floppy drive and ADB(or is it serial?) port on this, of course if you are running OS X there wouldn't be much point but they are both easy hacks and kinda cool. The chips are also easy to overclock you should get about 33MHz extra out of anything but the sub 300 chips often do 300 which is a nice boost. I've been thinking about doing an iMac hack for a while but I still have to finish my Quadra 605 hack.... -------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

while overclocking sounds good, I'm not sure if it's the solution for me if you're good at soldering tBoJ, you might like it Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |
