I just bought a Focus Enhancements MV16EN card, new in the box from www.Powerbookguy.com. I opened up the PB and popped the card in. Now the PB won't boot. It will play the opening MacOS theme music, and the screen will light up like it wants to boot, then ... nothing. So I then pulled the card out, and the PB started up fine. Put the MV16EN back in, and it won't boot again. I removed the battery, HD, FD;no difference. So then, I booted without the card, and installed the software. Re-installed the card, and wouldn't boot. On the the MV16EN it say's "For 53xx". Maybe it is the wrong card? Or am I just forgetting something? |

Did you try zapping PRAM after install? Card may not be 68K compatible.

I can think of two possibilities. Either the card is dead or you have some ugly bit of software in your System folder that does not like the card. I've stuck all manner of PCMCIA cards in my PB 190cs, including ones that where not Mac compatible. The computer always boots, at worst it complains about unrecognized hardware.Have you tried booting with the card in and extensions off? You might also double check that you have the right system enabler (PowerBook 5300/2300/190 Enabler) if you are running anythignbetween System 7.1 and 7.5. If zapping the PRAM and a fresh install of the OS don't solve the problem, then I'd bet the card has some electrical problem. Good luck! I don't think I mentioned that the MV16EN is an video out card. It plugs into the video-out port on the 190cs (it is a combo ethernet and video-out card). Also, how do you "zap" the PRAM?

How to zap the PRAM:Step 1: hit power key and hold down Command (Apple key), Option, P and R Step 2: Wait for the machine to chime about 5 - 7 times (thats my standard for a good PRAM zap, anyway). Once you've done this, let go, and machine will boot normally. Step 3: There is no Step 3! hit the power key then hold down.... holding down all the keys at once won't do much good - - - - - - - - - - - - - A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation. 68k ParaMedic |

Thanks all for the help I found out that I had a card for a 5300, while I have a 190cs. They aren't compatible AT ALL! Beware the MV16EN for the 5300, AS IT WILL NOT WORK ON THE 190! And vice versa. Once again, thanks all for the help!
