This is what I have set, I don't often rip songs and I have the space to store them. Is this a good setting?. What the purpose of a sample rate?. I assumed that since the sound should never switch to mono I could keep it really low.Mono 96 kbps Stereo 320 kbps I'm not using VBR Smart Encodings Adjustments - checked Filter out frequencies below 10 khz - checked Sample Rate - Auto Channels - Stereo Stereo mode - Normal Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

always leave mono at half of stereo. not lower, not higher. the reason is that when you encode a stereo track, at say (for sake of argument) 300k. there are two tracks there, one for left, and one for right, each encoded at 150k. when you encode a mono track at 150k, it is (aside from being mono) the same quality as the 300k stereo track.thats my two cents on MP3 encoding.. Beins that I'm on a PowerBook, without a very good speakerset or headphones, I usually leave it at the default settings.Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

The settings I always use for mp3 are:Mono 96 kbps Stereo 192 kbps I'd also leave Filter out frequencies below 10 khz unchecked because otherwise you'd be missing a lot of audio data. Everything else leave the same. For instance, the human voice has a lot of presence below 1 khz. Plus, a lot of music has bass below 100 Hz which you'd be missing. I've never used iTunes, so what are the other choices for Sample Rate? quote: What the purpose of a sample rate?.
The sample rate is how many times per second the mp3 encoding engine "looks at" a song to see what it's doing. More is better to a point. Past that point, the human ear cannot tell the difference between a mp3 file and the original CD. In my experience, that is 192 kbps. Any more and you wouldn't really hear the music sounding better but you'd be using more hard drive space. That also means that whoever you share the mp3 files with would have to wait longer for them to download. The Lightning Stalker Performa 631CD, 7.5.5 LC III Mail Server Q610 Q650 6400/180 40/1.6G/512k L2/enet/video-in/TV 7600/120 '604/233, 80/1.2G & 4G, 9.2.2 (Main Mac) Lady Smith Apples: Apple IIc 5.25" 2 Apple IIe |
