One of my friends is a writer and he wants to get rid of a working Apple ///. He has some of his old writings on there and he would like to get them printed out before he gives me the ///. Printing that stuff out is the least I could do for such a great present. He says he is not too worried about it, but I think he would appreciate it. He has the wordprocessing software that he used to make the files, just no printer. So I could either find a printer that interfaces with the /// or use what I have to try and print it. . .

quote:
I'd look into connecting the Apple /// to your PC or Macs via a serial cable and "printing" from the Apple /// whilst capturing text with a terminal application (like ZTerm or Hyperterminal) on the newer computer side. Then, you can print the documents from the other computer or archive them on a newer format like CD or 3.5" floppy.

Don't be surprised if some of the Apple /// floppies are dead. Magnetic floppy disks where never meant to last 20 years.

Good luck!

G4 suggested I try this route. There is something about computer archeology that exites me!

She's a hefty one too! There are some cards I saw in there on first inspection. I had my friend keep it until I was sure there would be some way to help him out. I have a few ideas thanks to G4 and a few people on the fritter. They suggested I do not go the 5.25" drive on a mac because it could fry some stuff. I think I'll steer clear of that, damn, could've been easy. . .

so there are no 5.25" drives I could hook up to an SE that I could transfer them to a 1.44mb floppy?

Got NuBus Mac? If you do, get yourself an Apple PC 5.25" drive, and teh controller card for it. That will let you get the data off those floppies.

maclovr. . .
found the drive @
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2752909490

is the controller card at all like the apple IIe emulation card seen here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2752917272

or something totally different?

Maybe I can just get a printer for the ///. . .will this work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2752881789&category=4610

Here is another card, though it says it is for the II
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2752565199&category=4610

I also found some II[x] controller cards, but I am not sure what will work. Not too much info, or tired of data mining

sorry for the barrage of questions on these non-68k machines.

I was just at Savers here in Boulder (a department store sized thrift shop). Since I went ther last week, they have organized their mac section. Now they have a IIci that comes with an external 5.25" drive. Since the IIci has a 5.25"port and also has a superdrive, would it be a good candidate for a transfer of the files from a /// to a printable comp?

Lets hope the forums dont' bork out this time...this is the third time in a row so far that i've typed this! Anyway....

1. Yep! Thats the drive!

2. Nope, nothing like that card. Thats a card that allows you to emulate an Apple IIe on your LC series Mac.

3. Should work. IIRC, a loooooooooooooooong time ago when i was in grade 1, we had an ImageBanger II hooked up to the Apple IIe in our classroom. Dunno how it was hooked up, but it should be possible on the ///.

4. Nope, thats a Serial card for an Apple ][

5. Yeah, should work. Is the drive the same as the one in the ebay auction that you linked to? Also, does the IIci have a card that the floppy plugs into? If so, it'll work. Just make sure you have Apple PC Exchange (standard with System 7.5 and later, although its easy to install in earlier systems), and a word processor that has a translator for whatever word processor was used on the ///, and it should work.

As for all the questions, nopro, thats what these forums are for!
