What's up people? First time caller -- long time listener.

I've got a PB 180c (stats: 150m HD, 14m RAM, OS 7.5.5, internal 14.4k modem) and I need some wisdom.

1) Should I be running 7.5.5, or should I drop down for better (i.e., faster) performance? It rund a little sluggish on this OS, though it is very stable.

2) I'd like to upgrade the internal modem to 56k, but I don't see Powerbook versions on eBay (just externals and PCIMAs). Any suggestions?

3) What's the best web browser for this machine and its stats? At both 14.4k and 56k?

Thanks (68k worth).

System 7.5.5 will do if you strip out unnecessary stuff from the extensions, mostly those extra things you probably won't need anyways.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think the fastest internal modem for the 1x0 series Powerbooks is 28.8. I know that there is no 56K internal modem for the 1x0 series. It would probably be faster if you can find an old 33.6 or 56K external modem and use that if you really need speed.

Here's candypunk's 68K Browser Surf-off, direct from the 68KMLA Website:
http://deathstar.creative.net.au/~mla/mla_site/browser_test/index.html

Read it over, and you'll have a better idea of which browser to choose.

To speed up the PowerBook, disable extensions like extra printers you don't use, extensions that are for a different version of PowerBook etc. (Apple tends to install items that sometimes you can't use like Control Panels etc.)

If you aren't going to do alot, you might want to disable virtual memory if it's on, that can drag a system down, although you don't have alot of RAM, so I'm not sure about that. Perhaps an old version of RamDoubler would do the trick.

I know from my use of CyberDog, it's quite fast and stable, it may not support fancy sites, but it loads this site, google, and other sites ok. Just for general surfing it will do fine. www.cyberdog.com I believe is the address.

You sure about that? My 180c came with a 56k internal. Worked pretty well too, until the machine died.

I checked the candypunk site and tried Explorer 4.1. Works well enough. Thanks for the advice.

Hey -- here's something else related to running 7.5.5 on the 180c:

On every 68k Mac I have that's running 7.5.5, I get this loud click sound in the speaker when I'm starting up (after the extensions and control panels have loaded) and whenever I adjust the sound volume. It happens every time. This doesn't happen on the 68ks that are running other OS versions besides 7.5.5. What's up with this?

Humm… My 145B is making a lot of noises when I put it to sleep and wake it up… but then there seems to be more then a few things wrong with it…

well, it could be nothing, I wouldnt worry too much about it…

but I havent used 7.5.5 for a while… I always used to install 7.5.0 on everything… [IIsi's, IIci, PB 165, etc…]

If I open my window all the bugs will get in…That's just one more reason to use a Mac!
