Can the RCA Out port of the 8600 be used as an alternative output source? I tried going into the Sound Control Panel to select it but it isn't listed, so is it there just for certian applications or???

Because under Sound In, I can use the RCA ports but not for sound out.

Any ideas?

it's on the same sound controller, and macs are capable of having only one output at a time really, the good news, is that if you select the built in controller, it should go out of the rca (line level or whatever) audio (red and white) ports, and the 1/8" minijack as well (as opposed to the mini-george)

that having been said, tell us what you actually want, aer you trying to get video or sound out?
sometimes people can't read your mind from over the forum software, Snitz is particularly buggy at letting people do that. IkonBoard will sometimes be a bit more of a help on that matter.

On my 8500, the RCA plugs send out the same signal as comes out of the speaker. And like you, the control panel (Monitors & Sound under 8.5) does not present any options to switch between the internal speakers or the RCA plugs. I don't know what happens if one plugs in a minijack into the speaker port, however. I would doubt that the RCA out could be independent because I doubt the 8500 has more than one stereo sound chipset.

On the other hand, I wonder if you and I are both missing some crucial little extension that is specific to the 8500/8600 and makes the Mac aware that those RCA audio out ports are back there. I know that I have transmigrated/upgraded/hacked my 8500, disks, and OS so many times that I'm not sure what's in the system folder anymore. Is your system install an unhacked 8600-specific install?

any CD 7.6 (what came with X600) and later would have any extensions you need, like the apple video extension.

it should anyway.

to the mac, it's just audio out, nothing more, nothing less, nothign special, nothing new.

Exactly. The RCA Audio in/out should work just like the minijacks do. Its the same kinda signal and everything.

I know that macs can have more than one audio output at once. On my telecast, I can set the output to either the internal Mac outputs like the speaker, or I can route it to the telecast. When the mac beeps, the sound goes to the telecast instead of the internal speaker and headphone jack. Dont know what the deal is with the RCA jacks though.

the telecast is an entirely different interface, with it's own controls and stuff right?

the 8600 RCA audio-out on the other hand, is controlled by the same audio controller as the minijacks, it's just that it's a "line level" and schtuff, or something, this works just like the Q840av, but they have the rca jacks there
