You know how I mentioned I was in a draw for, lots of people enterd.....but I still won!

Its a 120mhz Pentium, 32mb of RAM. Thing is, there is a BIOS bpassowrd, and it still has NT, so I cant log in.. I know to get rid of the BIOS password I can move a jumper on the motherboard, couldnt anyone give me a hint of how to stop this jumper. Ill format NT, and get 95 downloaded, but fun times ahead

What do you mean stop the jumper?

Reset the BIOS and the password is gone.

i'm surprised it was a competition though, I've found a fair few of these in the trash! You can't sniff at a free computer though...

Keep it to be running Windows NT, it runs fast on just about anything, and you'll love it.

Does it give you a password at boot or just when you want to get into the BIOS setup.

If there's no power on password, just use a DOS boot disk withRempass to generate a CMOS checksum error and that will reset the password.

If you can't get in at all, you need to take apart the case and unplug/remove the battery(s) in there and let it sit overnight. Laptops usually don't have a documented jumper for this, unfortunately.

Let me clarrify. I know about the jumper, but dont know what one. But, the battery thing will work?

Thing with NT is, I cant log in. It asks for a password, which I cannot supply as its not connected to the network. Any help is appreciated.

There are probably howtos out there on how to bypass NT passwords. Maybe a google search is in order?

Which jumper it is varies from motherboard to motherboard.

What brand of computer is it?

Is there a brand name such as Abit stamped on the mobo?

You are going to have to look up the mobo specs to find the jumper you need to flip.

then, you'll be able to find the install key and do a clean install if you DL and burn an NT4 workstation CD ISO or something

2x and 4x IDE CD drives are basically free.

Removing the battery should work, I'd leave it out for a few minutes just to be sure. If the board is almost jumperless look for a single jumper with probably 3 pins somewhere near the battery/BIOS chip. If it's a jumperless board guessing is easy. If it's not it's often but not always the only single jumper. Sometimes you have to remove it, sometimes you have to connect the 2 pins which are not normally connected.

I'd just yank the battery though.

Yanking the battery will work (the jumper does the same thing). Setting the bios to boot from the floppy first will allow you to fdisk the HD and start a clean install of the OS of your choice. Pretty simple really.

UPDATE 1: Hard Drive now formated FAT16 with Partion Magic 4.0. installing DOS 6.22..

UPDATE 2: DOS 6.22 installed, installing Windows 3.1

Actually, (well now you can't get the CD key from NT registry)

you can network install NT, and IIRC, there's a floppyset for at least 3.51

Sometimes it's the simple things, what can be the best things.

For example, playing with old computers...

a Macintosh LC with system 7.1 can be one of the simplest computers ever, even with AppleWorks5, but it's the things that you can do with that simplicity.

It would not be a challange at all to write a novel using a Macintosh LC, in fact, I would find it rather pleasant, and almost tried it once.

The Macintosh LC in that case, is less of a computer, and more of a writing tool. just the paper and pen, which needs you, the writer, with a brain. AppleWorks 5, TeachText, SimpleText even are great for just writing... (that is to say, Microsoft grammar is really a bad influence, and sometimes is wrong.)

Glad the battery thing worked.

So you could get to the NT login. It would have been simpler to get Rempass and then you wouldn't have had to "break in".

Enjoy your new laptop!Go to Top of Page

dang... Most of the cdrom drives I've ever gotten were free... why just the summer before last, I got a huge box full of cdrom drives, one was external, the rest internal *and mostly IDE as well*

that was also where I got a P-90 and a 486-33/66 for free, as well as loads of printers, keyboards and mice (well it was free to me, I think my mom and aunt bought the lot for some weird price) it was suppposed to be two complete computers, including monitors, and we got two computers, and a whole bunch of other junk, and NO MONITORS!!!

so I had a hard time doing anything with that lot until I was back in WA...
