I have 4 semi working powerbooks. I'm trying to set one up for the internet/email but I can't connect because I don't have a modem script for the internal modem. I'm pretty sure most of the modems are Apple Fax Data Modem #820-4021-B. There are 3 Powerbook 170's and a Powerbook 180. I'm using Opentransport 1.1.1 with Opentransport/PPP 1.0 and System 7.5.5.

Where can I find the scripts for these?
Which is the fastest modem?

Try the generic script. That sometimes does it for me.

I can't find a generic modem script. There's a US Robotics universal but that's about it. I know the internet will be really slow on this machine but I'd like to the try it atleast once.

Where can I find the proper software?

You might try Apple's download site and get a copy of System 7.5 installer. Try a clean install and the new system folder should install a copy of all the various modem scripts, copy the needed script to your old system folder, remove the new system folder, make sure the old system folder is blessed and you should be good to go (you could also take advantage of the clean install if you so desire). I know that downloading/installing umpteen MB of OS seems like a pain when all you need is a silly 4k modem script, but that's the only way that I can think of to recover the missing files.

It's a clean install of 7.5 with all the updates. No luck in getting them that way.

I think I found what you need. It claims to be for a wide range of PB and Duo with internal data/fax modems.

My apologies for making this thread wide-screen format, but Snitz has a snit on long URLs

Thanks, that little program worked with the modem, now if only my ISP worked with the modem. Why can't a modern ISP not support a 2400 bps modem, like really!. I'll find a use for my PB soon enough. To answer my question the

PB 170 and PB 140 have 2400bps data and 9600bps data modems.
PB 180 has the faster 14000bps modem but mine is busted.

One little mistake i once made that i should clue you in on: In the PowerBook Setup control panel, always make sure its set to internal modem instead of external modem. When my 180c worked, i spent ages trying to get the modem working, when i finally found that damn control panel!
