This little device is Apple's Brainchild for geeks and users everywhere.

It is a mini-router and webserver in a small palm sized case. You plug your DSL in one end, and your Mac, PC or whatever the heck you use in the other.

The device mimicks your machine's MAC address for ethernet use, and any requests sent to port 80 it takes, everthing else goes down the line to the Mac/PC unaltered.

The device is powered by a small (64MB) SRAM drive and a emergency FlashRAM card. (Which can be replaced) It is completely powered by iether USB or Firewire. It has firmware that loads Apache and PHP (And general libraries). (No, No MySQL.)

The system runs on a small footprint version of Darwin and has 16MB worth of plugin space where developers can create plugins for extra function. The unit has a battery which activates when the power is disconnected and does a mirror image to the FlashCard then powers the unit down safely.

Backup of the SRAM contents is usually handled by an application that communicates directly with the server and does backups on a regular basis.

Although SQL support is not present, one can use flat text files to run a board.

Hows that for a fun gadget? The specs and pieces to make it are so cheap, Apple could sell them at $99.99 each and make a tidy profit. Anyone who has broadband can instantly have a cool website right off thier own computer!

"Anyone who has broadband can instantly have a cool website right off thier own computer!"

wrongo, my provider blocks any requests for port 80. I cannot have a website unless THEY host it. On THEIR server. With THEIR diskquotas.

Besides, you think anyone would be able to make back their R&D budget by selling for $99? Maybe $99 worth of parts, but that thing would be about $400 by the time it had all those features you mentioned.

P.S. go get a patent for it!

That is a good idea. You really should patent it.
