My slot-loading iMac shipped with a 20 GB hard drive, which I have almost filled up. I would like to put in a larger drive. I've read that a 5400 RPM drive is the fastest you can go without overheating the iMac. Is this true? Also, is there a limit as to how big of a drive the iMac will work with?

5400 rpm would be best for cooling ... as the SL iMac dosent have a fan ... the limit of the IDE controller on the iMac is 128gb

it would proabably be easier to get an external firewire drive

Oh dear. I've seen threads about this topic (both tray and slot loading) about a billion times. It is true that slot-loaders have no fans, but let me say this once:
A 7200 RPM HARD DRIVE WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT, IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCES OVERHEAT A SLOT-LOADING iMAC!!!

I have a 400 MHz iMac DV Special Edition and replaced the stock 13 gig / 5400 rpm Quantum drive with a SCREAMING 80gb/7200rpm Seagate Baracuda IV last year and have been pleasantly content ever since. It is much quieter and faster than the Quantum (not to mention much larger! 80 gigs! yum)

I've had it since November and my iMac has yet to explode. So stop fretting now and get a 7200 rpm Seagate!

The only place I'd ever be concerned about an uber fast spinning HDD, is in the case of a laptop...

but they dont' een MAKE 7200 RPM HDDs for laptops IIRC...

I think you're right about that Cory...the fastest laptop drive i've heard of so far has been somewhere around 5400rpm.

yeah, I'm not much of a hard drive buff though...

I probably wouldn't notice if I was using a 4200, or a 10k RPM drive...

Couple of points

I think there are problems with 7200 RPM drives in early rev a - d iMacs, tray loaders. There is some stuff on applefritter about this, i think it's as much to do with poor PSUs in them.

I also think some companies are starting to make 7200 RPM drives, XYM has some stuff on this. Remeber as hardware evolves their our other benefits, not just size, I've no doubt that modern technology is bring cooler as well as larger laptop HDs

Then one has to ask, are laptops currently using IDE controllers that... or is that an "in the future" kind of development?

MacLover5, what speed is your 40 gigger in your 333 iMac?

7200 RPM drives are just fine. I have a 60gb 7200rpm in my 2001 iMac and it runs just fine.
