the subject says it all.

my server has been acting up lately, doing stuff like disconnecting my internet every 5 minutes or so, and i thought it was an ISP problem. i figured that i'd change modems real quick to see if that cleared it up, and it did. (so far). the first time i connected, i got a hardware failure message, but after that, it's been connecting at 115.2kbps ever since. it's damn fast!

Not to rain on your parade. But what kind of connection do you have? If it is 56k that sounds like the speed that the computer is connected to the modem at. If you are useing windows it is really bad about getting the two speed confused. Go to www.bandwidthplace.com to find out your real speed.

Thouht if you modem was borked I dont doubt that it is connecting faster.

On a side note it seems lately every time I post it is to rain on someone parde. Perhaps I should change my name to OneWhoRainsOnParades

yeah, i know, it's REALLY only connected at like 38.3. (same as before) but what's weird is it loads webpages twice as fast and i get 6-7k/sec on downloads instead of 4-5k. plus, it's way more stable

heh, when we had a 33.6k we got a top DL speed of 3.3kps…
4-5 would've been nice

If I open my window all the bugs will get in…That's just one more reason to use a Mac!

lol... I connect at 45.3, and my downloads are usually about 3-5k... I have seen the speed actually jump to like... over 100kbps (as reported by iGetter)

I know that it probably actually didn't go anywhere though

I remember my Modem days and I still have my modem here, but I don't really use it. In fact, I just got a TelePort Gold II Modem for my mac to send faxes. (It's external, so I can hook my phone into it)

The only thing else I need is a program for my Mac to have caller ID.

The other night I ran a bandwidth test on my system (Cable modem)...

I got 5.7Mbps downstream, 903kbps upstream. Just to test this, I was able to download a 200MB file at sustained 675K/sec. Woohoo!

all i have to say is.... SHUT UP!!!! While you might get those speeds I'd never get a cable modem... From what I've heard about them anyway, they're not worth it. My friend has 1.2MB (nearly T1) in his house... but your cable, my God, that's crazy..... I connect on dialup at 48k or so... sometimes 50k.

adendum: that 1.2Mbps is piped in wirelessly to his house...

and My Verizon DSL gets 93kps down [not sustained that's our RECORD; and 15 up (average), peaking at 23kps…]

heh. I can get sustained 150KB/s (apple CD 150 supa speed!) but my connection sometimes has fits, and disconnects at random (stupid cheap-ass telus DSL)

On my PC, windoze connects to the ext. modem at 115.2 kbps, and the modem is a 56kbps modem that connects to the server at 28.8kbps. Stupid rural phone lines.[>:(]

Well, it was an exceptional case. Normally, during the daytime hours, the average speed is closer to 1Mbps. That 5.7Mbps speed was at about 1AM EST, while no one else was on my internal network.

Back when I went to RIT, the highest sustained transfer speed I ever saw was between my friend's computer and my own, transfering at 1MB/sec (10Mbps, full 10Base-T), with the network average at about 500K/sec. Too bad it costs and arm and a leg to go there.
