I picked up a Centris 610 during some saturday morning sales not too long ago. The machine worked great, but had a 680LC40, and I like to put in 68040s. When I go to open it up, there is a something that looks like the end of a jumper cable attached to a part of the motherboard. this is very close to the processor, so I had to remove it to switch them out. Well, when I removed it is seemed like that jumper cable thing was sort of securing that piece onto the motherboard. Now I cannot set it back, and it looks like the piece is pretty much hanging by a thread. Now when I go to power the centris, it does not hold. If I keep holding down the power button, it turns on, but no boot. As soon as I let go of the power button, no power. I will post pictures so as to give a better idea of what the heck I am talking about. any ideas of how to get this thing back on or why it would have been there in the first place? I have a bad feeling that this might be my first dead mac. I guess I could just get another motherboard. . . _____________________________________________ I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it. Bummer! But maybe it is just a loose cable or intermittant connection inside the computer. What is the "jumper cable" thing? If it is one of the power cables, it should stay in its receptacle from friction. Post some piccies and I'm sure we can figure things out.G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent Edited by - G4from128k on 25 Aug 2003 07:02:08

yeah pics would be good ... is it actually part of the mobo hanging off or something connected into a socket hanging off ... looking at the c610 board scans on AF there dosnet seem to be any sockets near the proc ... the only thing near is the PRAM batt slot ???Orcadian MLA Division 68ks Liberated: 2 |

fellas, I will surely post pics, unfortunately work has kept me busy for the last few days. The piece that is hanging off is actually part of the motherboard, and it is pretty close to the PRAM battery slot between the processor and the drivebay. The "jumper cable" thingy is made by 3M, and it looks to be some kind of electrical part. there are some wires soldered onto it. My guess is that it was keeping the piece attatched to the mobo, and was a path for electricity to go through (I am not at all an electrician) and I went ahead and messed it up. Have a radiohead concert tonight, so I will not have pics, but look in the next day or so and will post something. . . _____________________________________________ I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it. Silly question, but could this be some kind of overclocking thing? I'm thinking of something like OE sells since the description sounds a little like something out of the Clock Chipping page.<<<john>>> |

Yep, jruschme nailed it. That little jumper cable thingie is/was a overclocking hack. The little silver box object on top is the new crystal (you should be able to puzzle out the clock speed). The dislodged black object is part of the clock circuitry of the Centris. As a first step, resoldering the black chip might restore the computer to good health unless the overclocking mod involved other changes to the mobo. A bit of Googling should help you find info on these "clock chip" modifications. And if you want a fun challenge, see if you can rewire/reinstall the jumper cable thing back onto the reinstalled black chip to overclock the new processor. Best wishes, G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

The black thing is the SMT oscillator, and it really does not have to be reinstalled if you want it overclocked here's a little page I made with an explanation... but I am tired, so it might not make much sense http://68k.dyndns.org/osc/osc.html Artillery Commander/Engineer, 68kMLA Liberated: LCII , III+, IIci, Q700, 800, and 840av, P550, 410 Contraband: Beige G3/300 MT o/c 400mhz, (2) 6100's Hotline mirror server: 68k.dyndns.org
