I was over at my brother's frat house last weekend, and tried to fire up my 840av he had on loan, and it is totally dead now (with or without pram battery).

It was on crack anyhow, since it would not start with a pram battery, but now it is just dead.

No Apple product has ever totally failed while it was with me…
our SE/30 was at my grandma's when the screen died… my old PB165 was sold to my cousin just before it died…
I don't really trust other people with my stuff…

Eek, i know what you mean. One time in grade 8 i had a fairly new, really nice pair of walkman speakers out on loan to a "friend". When i got them back, they were dead.

Edit - Oh and btw, I haven't loaned a thing out to a friend since that. Since my bad experiences in school, its rather hard for me to get to trust someone these days.

EEEKKK!! Heathen - hand me the crowbar and I'll go talk to him about it ;)

Seriously though, that's a real shame. I don't think there is anything that really ever fails as a routine on 840avs either, neither are they delicate either, mine has been all over and been thrown about a lot in it's time with me (yet is still in near mint condition - how does that work!!??).

Shame :(

After a quick look at the mobo, there are some capacitors that appear to have leaked, so if I find time, I *might* try to clean up the corrosion and solder some new caps on it from a dead 6100 mobo, just to see what happens to the poor thing. Maybe this capacitor aneurysm has just put it in a coma, as long as nothing was fried by the many shorts from the corrosion.

Yikes!
I'd recommend not using the caps from another board which you know to be dead. Caps really cost only a few cents, using new caps could save you much diagnostic and logistic confusion.
Good luck!

Now I really believe in the power of bathing a dead motherboard...It fixed my powerbook 5300cs, and now it fixed my 840av.

I washed the motherboard under warm tap water and scrubbed it with an old toothbrush, then rinsed it with distilled water. After that, I took it out to the garage and dried it with 125psi compressed air. Then I put the motherboard in the case and fired it up, and it worked! It still has the pram battery issue: the power supply wont even click with a pram battery installed, but the mac works fine if the battery is removed, only if I do the power switch trick.

I thought you had dodgy tap water that caused all this corrosion and stuff??? But yeah...cool.
