A friend and I spend half a day cruising the hard rubbish, no luck was had in the morning but by late afternoon things had changed!

Wot we got!

Macintosh 512k - lots of yellowing, almost brown even, works well includes travel disk!

Amiga 500 with memory upgrade, seems to work but couldn't be bother connecting to screen, need to check later.

2x SCSI removable caddies.

Weird ass internal comm port to sega mega drive controller card! (for pc)

AV cables

2x boxes of Mac floppies

Penitum 133, junk but has lots of 72 pin RAM and a decent HD, sound and video cards.

And now for the real finds

Complete Apple 2GS with monitor, keyboard, mouse, memory upgrade, 5 1/4 floppy drive and 3 1/2" drive, mint condition works excellently, need to get some software on it and find a SCSI card though

And an AMD k6-2 400 with a zip drive and OK motherboard, to date this is the fastest PC we have found in the trash, also had some RAM and a good HD. Prior to now all we ever find a 386's and 486's and a few 133's.

Sony 17" monitor, poweron, degauses but no picture, should be able to fix it, might still be under warranty.

We could have picked up a ton more monitors including an amiga one but they were all 14" and not worth the hassle. We almost made the mac finds a hattrick but the LC575 was gutted excecpt for the actual screen, analogue board, everything, gone so we left it.

During the week we also found 2x 6100's one was maxed out with RAM etc but mine wasn't, although it did have L2 cache and the right monitor adaptor. And a Quadra 610 with a 50MHz PPC accelerator card.

Oh, we also found an image banger 2 but we left it as we really had no use, strangely NONE of these machines had keyboards (apart from the Apple ][), normally there are tons

Working amiga monitors in good shape (1084s) get $40 or more on ebay. You need one for the A500 because they have a special connector and are 15khz sync monitors (wont work at 31khz like normal vga monitors). The A500 is a GREAT retro gaming machine.

The IIgs is cool, but its hard to find a scsi card for them thats under $50 (and thats just for the cheapest apple II scsi rev c card, the fast scsi cards are $100 or more)

Damn, wish I had got the monitor now! Oh well it's be long gone by now. I did keep the cable for it but I guess that's not much use.

Yeah, SCSI cards seem expensive, a while back there were a few job lots of unknown Apple 2 cards, that went for nothing because they were poorly described, hopefully I'll see something like that again, I'm keeping an eye on another memory card, a parallel printer card and some floppy card, they are all going cheap but it's the SCSI and ethernet cards I really want...

Dumpster diving...that's the way to do it. Bring your camera along next time and post some pics of the scene! That's dedication there folks. That's awesome.

Congrats on the IIgs! Let me know if you source any cheap parts for it. I'm looking for some myself.

Selling a K62-400 for 2-300 USD?? 200 max!

Anyway still sourcing parts for the 2gs, SCSI cards are super expensive. I also have a line on an AMIGA HD/SCSI/RAM box. It's pretty cool it has space for *MB of RAM, adds an external SCSI port, although I beleive the internal HD is IDE. Without this the Amiga is kind of useless as floppies are such a pain and I'd rather use an emulator than bother with them.

Any k6-2 system w/o a monitor is worth maybe $100, $150 w/monitor

For $300 you can get a PC in the 1+ghz range.

As far as the amiga goes most games are only a few floppies, so you dont have to swap them out that often. An emulator sucks compared to the real thing. If you cant find an amiga monitor or a 15khz pc monitor (I have a 1084 monitor for my a500, NEC 3ds for my A1200) try getting an A520 composite converter on ebay and connect it to your tv. Most floppy games are not HD installable on the a500. Need any information on the amiga let me know.

& keep the 1084 monitors, they are v.good, I've had mine hooked up to my Quadra, my video(very good picture), my st(now old dead st)& currently I use my 1084 for my PSOne & as a games console screen I can't say that I have used better, I would say ideally suited!

As for the rest of your find you did great, av cables are allways handy indeed just cables are great to have & just think most of the internet is just things connected by wires!

I scored an Amstrad 464 and monitor yesterday! Not sure what I will do with that one though!

I'm not sure what to do with the Amiga. There is an HD box on eBay I;m bidding on but the A500 with HD is massive. The alternative is to try and pick up an A600 which is smaller and can use an internal HD,, although 2.5" only. This is one time I certainly wish I was in the UK where there are shed loads of Amiga stuff.

The cable is 15 or 25 to about 9 pins, both ends female.

Well the 15 pin D female sounds right for the back of the Amiga, but my 1084s monitoer has a 9 pin D female, therefore requiring a 9 pin D male.

This is just an interest thing for me. I would be interested in a 9 pin D rgb cable.

Hey the Amstrad cpc464, you can play blocky Turrican, you can use the monitor with an st they made an adapter.

Is the monitor green monochrome or colour?

I love my 1084 amiga monitor. It has the round type connections on the back as well as rca's. I can connect my A500 to the analog connection, my c128 in normal rca 40 column and seperate cable for 80 column digital all at the same time and switch between modes.

& we might not all be sure what a dumpster is, is it a skip?

What I didn't mention about the 1084s monitor is the sound, not the best it has to be said, what I have done is to hook up a pair of speakers from the PSOne itself, sounds great!

The speakers are the ones I got with my first pc, a P90 or something like that bought circa 98. The speakers are better than the speakers that I got with my new pc!, so I use my PSOne for playing cd's rather than my pc.

Anyone want to set up a Commodore monitor page?

So, if it is Dumpster Diving here in the states, is it Skip Snorkelling? or Skip Skimming? or Skip Dipping? in the mother England? Or perhaps its Rubbish Rooting or Dustbin Diving?

Enquiring/Inquiring minds want to know what colourful/colorful term is used for this most pleasant, if dirty, hobby.

I prefer to call 'em "Dumpsters", and the activity "Dumpster diving".
