Picked up two Powerbook 1400's recently.

1400cs 117mhz 24/1.4 w/ adaptor & floppy module
1400c 133mhz 24/1.4 w/ adaptor, floppy, CD, 56k modem & Ethernet

I'd never encounted a passive matrix screen before (I've also got a 540c and various B&W PB's), and boy does it suck compared to the active matrix! I couldn't use one for any length of time!

Anyway, I've semi retired my 540c from portable duties and am now using the 1400c. The batteries are good for about an hour each, and if I can find a cheap memory upgrade and a G3 card then I'll be cooking on gas!!

Nice!

Honestly though do not waste your money on a G3 upgrade for one of these, the video is always going to suck, it's still going to have a passive matrix screen, it will never have USB and worst of all you will be stuck with a 64MB RAM ceiling. If the G3 could reach it's full potential on that 1400's bus it you wouldn't really be able to run any programs that could take advantage of it because of the small amount of RAM. I've always found RAM rather pricey for the 1400's as well.

I'd just enjoy the 1400 for what it is. If you do want an upgrade though I'd suggest selling both the 1400's and throw in the money you would have spend on a G3 upgrade and you'd have enough to buy a 3400, a very capable powerbook, that can use USB cards, active matrix screen 144MB of RAM CD/modem/ethernet and a few other bits and pieces. You can buy these maxed out for about 300 USD /240 UKP and I've seen them go on eBay UK for 250-300

Exactly. The G3 upgrades are fun, but they're not worth it, mainly because of the slow video, lack of CardBus, low RAM ceiling, and the NuBus architecture, that prevents you from running OS X.

cool, let him have his fun with the 'books though

I stand with the G3 advice though... I don't love upgrade cards and replaced motherboards... (see my topic about ebay gone awry... that makes me a (I'll add the word i'm looking in later)

I've always wanted an older PPC PowerBook
