Hello.

I have just acquired a Apple Mac LC575. It was going to get thrown out
I love computers to much to that happen. This is my first Mac ;)
I brought a LS PDS slot 10mbit NIC for it.
But the main problem I have is the Mac is useless with out an OS
That’s right it has nothing.
So I would like to format it and reinstall System 7.5.5 I think that would
be the best for it, if not please tell me what to use I what to use it on the web
to.
I have no other Mac computers and everyone I know as a PC or a Sun.
So how do I go about formatting it and reinstalling an OS?
I have nothing but the Mac and keyboard and mouse CD-Rom works
as dose floppy.

So if anyone can help me I would really be thankful I want to see this
Mac live.

Thank you

Humm… well I'd acctually reccomend system 7.6.1 or 8.1; but if you don't want to get a copy of those, then heres what to do about 7.5.5…

You might not need to format the HD, just install the system on it…

anyway, you need to download a set of floppy images and then use a program called Disk Copy to make them into floppies
[You might need to emulate the Mac OS for that; and I don't know how you would do that, since Im a PURE Mac guy…]
the floppies are avalible at
http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html#system
scroll down to where it says: Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/System_7.5.3_01of19.smi.bin

That is the first file you need to download, followed by the files under it [note: these are for system 7.5.3, you have to download the 7.5.5 update seperatly; which is somewhere else on the page…]

but if you want to try and get 7.6.1 or 8.1 [these both come on CD], check www.megamacs.com

if you want you can try and download them off of Hotline [ www.hotspringsinc.com ]
use www.tracker-tracker.com/hotline to find them, they also have instructions on using Hotline there

well, good luck ^_^

If I open my window all the bugs will get in… That's just one more reason to use a Mac!

7.5.5 is just fine on LCs, it works fine on my LCIII ...

your best option would be to get a cd version, so 7.6.1 would be your best bet ... look on ebay, you should be able to find a cd pretty easily and cheaply ... then just boot the mac, pop the cd in the drive, and follow the on screen instructions ...

without an OS on it you are not going to be able to transfer anything with the ethernet card (as the drivers are in the OS), and AFAIK burning a mac bootable CD on a PC (even through basalisk) is nigh on impossible

Why would you recommend 7.6.1?, I have both 7.6.1 and 7.5.5 and I'm curious which is better, seeing that they are so close to together?. Nobody really mentions 7.6.1...

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/citonx600/Mac_OS_7.5.3_User_Disc.toast?download

Download that Toast image and find a PC user with "Nero Burning ROM" to burn it with. When Nero starts, tell it you are going to burn an Image file. Select the toast image in the menu, and a dialogue will show.

Select the filesystem to be "HFS" and burn. It is a bootable CD with 7.5.3 and updates on it.

Have fun!

Thank you all for you help, Thanks for that toast image
The Balance Of Judgement.
It’s all up and running now! Happiness.

Only problem is that Netscape 3.04 when I go into the properties page, either be general or network properties it flashes up the window and the instantly disappears!
Maybe I have done something wrong here or its something I am missing? I am not sure ?

Thanks everyone

Glad to hear it's working. The nice thing about that toast image I made is that for all intensive purposes it is legal since Apple released System 7.5.3 for the masses. So, it's nice to have your system, updates and goodies all in one CD.

As for netscape, it appears it is crashing. Perhaps try another version (from netscape's archive) or do some system updates.

EDO *might* work, although generally to be on the safe side, Macs generally prefer FPM (Fast Page Mode)

I have just put in the 32mb EDO stick so far so good :)
All my FPM ram is in my PERC card on one my PC servers.
Hence why I asked about EDO.
It’s sure a big improvement on 4mb lol

How can I find out how much video ram is in it?
Can it take anymore then 2x512kb sticks?

Thanks for all your help!

some screensavers have a password protect option ... MacDim does, as well as having lots of screensaver plugins
