Well, I'm not sure whether I'm lucky or not…
I got this Macintosh Portable free; original case, all the manuals, and the power adapter…
but, whenever I press a button on the keyboard to start it up, it just makes the noise and flashes the screen…
I tried removing and reinserting the battery, and replacing the 9V battery, but still the same thing.

I also tried leaving it plugged in all night, but that didnt change anything…

The portable is kinda out of my knowledge area, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks ^_^

Have you gotten the service manual (from gamba?) and rebuild it?

I tried this with my PowerBook 100, while it didn't work for me, it's generally a good idea to try it... because there might be a loose connection or something...

The Portable is famous for *requiring* a charged battery in order to power on. The surge current drawn by the HD is too large for the ac adapter alone.

Problem is that the lead-acid batteries are almost never in good shape, and they cannot be reconditioned. Once they've been stored discharged for any significant length of time, they're pretty much permanently gone.

You will have to rebuild the battery to get this puppy to turn on. You can also disconnect the HD and use the portable in floppy-only mode.

A PB100 adapter will run one without a good battery installed. there are also some old threads over on fritter (and maybe here too) about configuring a small battery to allow it to run off the stock adapter.

A PB100 adapter will NOT run a Portable that has a stock hard drive. I have a Portable, and am speaking from direct experience, not just repeating what I've heard from unreliable sources. If the Portable has been retrofitted with a newer, lower power hard drive, then it is barely conceivable that a PB100 adapter could do the job, but I am highly doubtful.

In general, you need the battery UNLESS you disconnect the hard drive, just as I said earlier.

Humm… I left it charging for a few days and now it will load to the ? Mark floppy
but it doesnt have enough ram to load system 7.5 off the floppy, and the Hard Drive is Disconnected [where is the port for it on the Mother board?]

another thing I noticed when I got it loaded to the ? mark floppy, [and the pointer] is that I can't seem to move it pointer right very well, even when I use the little wheel with my finger, but it will go up, down, and left normally; but I wasn't sure how to fix the wheel thing… [It seems to be rubbing on the bottom?]

Well, Thanks ^_^

I highly recommend sys 6.0.8 unless you absolutely need a version of 7. In that case, go for something like 7.0.1 (with updater). Ram for the Portable is extremely expensive, so you will probably want to get by with whatever it came with.

As to the HD, there is an internal scsi cable in the bay that holds the drive. The stock drive is an oddball with low-power terminations and a nonstandard connector. To use a newer drive, you have to make your own adapter or connector.

You clean the trackball the same as an ordinary mouse. Remove the ball retainer, take out the ball, and clean the rollers. Reassemble. Should work great afterwards.

Actually, I did that myself with my (Apple stickered 40SC, Conner) HDD equipped, NASA nameplated Portable and my PB100's power adapter.

Dunno for sure it was a stock drive, but it booted fine and ran just fine! I trust your judgement about it being marginal though, maybe I was overloading the adapter, but I never noticed any obvious overheating.

I know where the SCSI cable connects to the HD [since it is connected *There* right now], but I dont know where to put the Other end of the cable On the Mother Board…

Humm… I could try system 6… But I've Never used it before

How much memory have you got?

if you can, run 7.0 at least... I see no reason not to, IIRC, it came with 7.something anyway right?

have you tried an external mouse?

this is a regluarl 3.5" hdd right? dunno if you should need to find connectors on the motherboard...

AppleSpec says that it came with like 6.0.5 or something…

but it doesnt have enough ram to start up sys 7.5 [only thing think I could find at the time]
*remembers where his 7.0 disks are*

but yea… it looks like the orig. HD with the weird connector…

and I dont have any system 6.0.x disks… [I tried to make some once, but I think I only had bad floppies then…]

You can get sys6 from Apple itself, among other places:

http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_6.0.x/

I recommend 6.0.8, the latest and greatest version of sys6.

You'll be happy to see that the finder + system together take up less than 1MB. Can't ever get there with sys7!
