Hi, I just gutted a P200mhz PC and traded some parts with a POS of emachine. The emachine broke but luckily I saved my Red Alert saved games to a diskette. Any way. The P200 had, for some strange reason, 168 pin ram and 72 pin. I transferred the 32mb (2x16mb) of 72 Pin RAM to my Performa 5200 and they worked. I had 32mb (2x16mb) in there before but I'm not sure what kind it is (FPM or EDO), the kind in the PC was edo. Which kind would be faster for a the PPC Performa, EDO or FPM?. If I ever get my Quadra 650 up again I liked to put all 4 chips in for 64mb or ram. I don't suppose I can mix FPM and EDO. Where can I search ram info to find out?Performa Ram: LGS GM71C17400AJ7 LGS GM71C17403BJ6 PC Ram: HY5117404A J-60 Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

A great place to identify 72-pin SIMMs (and some more recent types of RAM) is the Chipmunk DRAM pages:http://www.chipmunk.nl/DRAM/ChipManufacturers.htm According to them, your original Performa RAM is Goldstar, 5 volt, 2k refresh. Interestingly, one of your Performa's SIMMs appears to be FPM, while the other appears to be EDO. According to Chipmunk, the last zero in the "400" part of the number designates FPM, while the 3 in the "403" part of the other SIMM's number designates EDO. In addition, the FPM module is rated at 70ns while the EDO is rated at 60ns. Most Macs that are officially supposed to use FPM RAM can use EDO (it just gets used in the slightly slower FPM mode). However, it is usually advised never to mix FPM and EDO RAM. If your Performa was working previously, I guess you got lucky. As for the difference in speed, it's irrelevant. You can mix speeds (80ns, 70ns, 60ns, etc.) in a Mac -- all the RAM will operate at the speed of the slowest installed module. The PC RAM is Hyundai, 5 volt, EDO RAM, 60ns. As for speed, none of the RAM in question will make any difference. Technically the PC RAM is a little faster since it will operate at 60ns. (The presence of the one 70ns SIMM in the original Performa RAM will make both SIMMs operate at 70ns). But you will never, ever, ever notice the difference in usage. I would guess that a RAM speed-reading utility (like NewerTech's old Guage PRO) wouldn't pick up anything more than an infinitesimal difference, if that. I've never had problems mixing and matching 72-pin memories, I wasn't even aware that there was different types... .... weird..Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

Thanks that was a great link!. I went around the house and found most of the ram I had on the website. I don't think I'll notice the change in peformance in the Peforma 5200 any way . I found some unknown ram in my Quadra though, it was 4P4001JDJ-07. I think they're 4mb. Is there a program that I can run and tell me what kind it is (edo-fpm)?, I'd like to double check. Thanks Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

TechTool and Apple System Profiler *MIGHT* be able to tell you, I know that on my Tibook it tells me what kind of RAM is in which slot...that *might* be the hardware test CD though...
