As I recall, there is also an issue of trust and respect to the original founders of the MLA.

If its the server then you either live with it or pay for a new host. Could it be just the software your running causing problems?

Good idea. Btw, this is another reminder that Mordor$oft should never enter the aircraft industry, as their JETs do crash regularly. I've seen enough JETs fall off the web, i don't want to see Mordor$oft JETs falling out of the sky.

The company.organization that runs this domain (www.literatureclassics.com) has a package deal and cAnnot run extra software other than what they have. I talked to ~Coxy and even though I was willing to give them a more robust Microsoft Option (The Enterprise SQL Server) they were unable to use it due to a licensing/contract deal.

So, we have what we have, there is no changing except for those who want to perhaps add new images or other components that this board supports.

You would have to talk to ~Coxy before anything.

ahh... I believe I remember discussion about that...

I believe that for a large hosting company to be legally able to use your software would be kinda "weird" anyway... 'twould be "taboo" one would think... especially considering the international borders and the way it just sounds so... "wrong" from the legal standpoint (no matter how right it may be...)

Would 75 MB of webspace, for free, with PHP and MySQL support, be enough to run these forums on?

Depends how reliable it is, how much bandwidth we get, and how much room there is to grow.

It's not a matter of space but bandwidth because forums use up alot of bandwidth.

Exactly. Last time i heard, the MLA uses more than 1 gig a month as far as bandwidth is concerned.

Isnt bandwidth a measure of how much content the site can pump out at any given time (how many users can get the webpage at the same exact time) while the monthly usage is just the total amount of data served in that month. Most services have a maximum bandwidth and a maximum usage per month in their price points.

that is a good thought, but IIRC, "bandwidth" in this situation means transfer..

this could be a source of alot of confusion...

so we use over 1 gb of "transfer" each month...
do we have a transfer limit?
what is the bandwidth (Internet speed) of the servers @LitClassics?
Do we really want to try to move?
if you are trying to move the MLA, you obviously weren't here for the last month and a half...

hehe .. congrats ... but really 1gb a month isnt that much ... most hosting packages ive seen start with a 5 gig/month transfers ... but powweb seems good ... $7.77/month for 45gb of transfers and 650mb of space ... whats that ... like £5

one GB/month?

/me faints.....

when I had the old Genecomp.NET up, I made MAYBE 31 or 21MB in transfers on the forum...

granted, it had nine members (maybe 17...) and about 300 posts total...

I haven't been able to run webalizer on any other server/computer since (so I don't know how much transfer I've made like... over ethernet from the tibook...)

Well, Bandwidth isn't cheap and even if companies say they give you so much, if you read the fine print they define what they consider to be "fair use" and if your site draws too much from thier systems, then they can boot you off.

Since the dot com bubble burst, the inetrnet isn't the same. You are looking at at least a good 100-200 dollars a year to get reliable and decent webhosting for the MLA.

That doesn't even address the issue that ~Coxy posted about before. There was a huge thread on what was refered to "MLA 2.0" and I'm not going to get into it, so needless to say, we are staying here, and I think the general subject of migrating should be dropped. (Hey, it's free! How good is that? )

You people are silly. Why? Because you're staying on this POS board. The forum software sucks, the host sucks, but you refuse to migrate. Suit yourselves, and get used to that Microsoft JET Error message.

While I too respect ~Coxy, I don't see that as a reason to stay on an outdated board with a sucky host.

What I was going to suggest was free as well. And reliable. And pop-up/ad free. In fact, I've used that particular host for more than a year now and I've personally spoken to the owner on several occasions.

But hey...if you're too stupid to take a chance, then can you say JET!!?

Whilst I think we should either move or fix the problem, I don't think we should change the forum software (Snitz). It may not have as many 'features' as phpBB or Invision Power Board, *but* on a 68k machine (and even low-spec PM's), forums running these boards take an age to render in Netscape 4.08, iCab & IE4.

Its all about the content anyway, I don't care if it looks fancy or not.

They will if we do something about it. Does anyone know anyone who knows ASP? Perhaps they could suggest a solution based on the error messages/logs which they Coxy or someone at LC could implement.

Or another option, we get someone at LC to fix it. I for one would be willing to contribute $5 to a fund to get someone to spend some time looking at it. If we could get 10 people, thats a $50 incentive to someone.

Or something like that?Go to Top of Page

do these errors appear on all the LC forums or just the MLA ???, because if they are on all the forums then its really LCs job to fix them ... from the error messages the error appears to be in a file called "inc_top.asp" how about replacing this with one from a new snitz install, or how about updating snitz to the latest version to see if that fixes it

rawr, ur hosting u are showing can barely meet our needs as we have now, let alone as we grow.

I'm all for getting this thing updated instead. I/we need to speak to coxy aboot what is truely going wrong on the server, the forums, the server, or what. I believe a simple fix is really all we need to keep these JETs from being an issue.

As I've said before I think moving to someones personal server is a *really* bad idea. As we've seen people come and go from the MLA and not everyone stays friends, despite the best intentions.

What if the forums move to homebodies personal server, then they have a falling out and trash the whole thing? I think that would be a lot worse than the odd weekend of downtime, although it is extremely annoying things could be a lot worse.
