I have never thought that I would need a Mac (I think they are GREAT media machines, but I have other interests). I find myself needing to read a stack or Syquest 88 and 44 carts and convert their contents (mainly Framemaker and Canvas files) into a format that I can edit on my PC and archive on a server. I have already scored a Syquest SCSI drive from eBay, and am now looking for a suitable Mac to connect it to for the reading from carts, plus the Mac side of the conversion (maybe printing Postscript files), and eventual network porting to a PC. I am lucky to have inherited most of the software that created the files (on floppy mid 90's vintage).Question for the Macingurus: Which Mac should I try to get (most of them are very cheap on eBay, and the company will re-emburse). I have seen a IIci with ethernet, video card, and 500 meg HDD that looked tempting. With system 7 or above, I expect to be OK on the SCSI drives and the software. What are you suggestions? Love 'em all... Let GOD sort 'em out! |

Welcome to the MLA! Sorry we dont help people switch from Mac to PC. Just kidding! What I would do is get a Quadra class computer and load it up with your software and just start banging the stuff out. I am selling a Quadra 700 with A/UX but I would put regular MacOS on it if you want it instead. topic.asp.TOPIC_ID=5544.html A Quadra is a good machine because it was more of a workstation and less of a home computer and they all have full CPU's with FPU's. Most Quadras can be upgraded to powerpc if the need arises very easily.Logan Quadra 950, Workgroup Server 9150, Performa 6400, Powerbook 2300c, 4x Quadra 700's, iBook |
