Ofcourse, I dobut anybody other than myself and a few friends will go after them, so Im prety sure I got one in the bag....and anway, the guy incharge of the computers is my Maths C & B teacher.....he better give me one that works

Heh, cool! What type are they? If they're that shitty, they're probably Ipexes, but i thought i may as well ask anyway.

Btw, if you get an Ipex, make sure you do the following:

a) Take out any good parts it may have. (Oh no! what am i saying?)

b) Find a nice Holden of the 6 or 8 cylinder variety

c) Back over it.

And then post pics!

Btw, i thought your parents only let you have one comp at a time?

Wouldnt that destroy the holden, they are shit remember . Yeh, the teacher, is a really could at selling stuff. On assembly, the pitch for them were: "They arnt any good. The wont run Windows 2000, and have small hardrives, adn they might not even work. Probably only good to rip apart and see how the computer goes together..then smash it". Pfft, the machine has BeOS or Rhaspody DR2 stamped all over it.

[EDIT] Heck, the spelling in that line was bad. I can see you can now delete your own replies with this forum...nice.

A pentium 166 can run Windows 2000, it just needs to have enough RAM and alarge enough hard disk. My P166 with 64MB RAM ran Windows 2000 nicely, a little slow when using programs that use CPU alot, but other than that it was fine.

RAM is the key issue though, if you can put 128 in it, the better. Or, for an added flavour, stir in 3 CD's of RedHat Linux, 1 CD of Knoppix, 1 CD of Windows 2000, stir untill smooth, boil for 20 minutes and serve hot.

A P166 makes a good retro pc gaming rig (assuming you can get a good sound/video card)

FYI Windows 2000 is slow on anything

P166 - represents a golden era when PC games ere simple and fun to play and you didn't have to learn your way around the keyboard backwards tp play them. Indycar Racing still stands up as the best race car sim of ALL time. I played it for days at a time. Carmageddon was another all time classic that echoed through the halls of my P150 around that time. Oh happy days.....

As for crappy PC vendors, Packard Bell made really sucky machines over here. Large lumps of propriery board and a total bitch to upgrade.

Lol, Crappard Smell is bad anywhere. But not as bad as Ipex, of course.

As for the P166 representing the golden era of PC games, you're right there, although a lot of the games that came out in the 486 era weren't all that bad either.

The 486 era was nice too. Daewoo made a kick-ass Logic Board that ran the 486 DX2 series and featured PCI slots. It was a high end board which would only suport a PCI Video card. If you tried booting with an ISA card it wouldn't work, it would just sit there. It had sound, onboard ports and, the BIOS was GUI based, allowing you to use a mouse to set everything up. It was a very nice board and had good speeds.

Seanix made some very nice P166/200 machines in thier business line. The machines had fast boards, USB and lots of features. The Intel chipset was a little buggy, but once you got around it, had a nice chunk of ram in it, they flew. The P166 era and even the higher end 486 machines in DOS can use the ZSNES emulator, the best SNES emulator out there, to play fullscreen EagleFX enhanced games that make the game look and feel way better. Not to mention a keyboard has so many more options, so making a quick and useable gamepad keys out of a keyboard is a cinch, and easier to use. Gamepads always gave me blisters cause they were just awkward.

BIOS with a mouse!? you'd think that would be standard by now, if it first appeared in the 486 era...

yeah this Packard Hell is gonna be a really good llama-X test machine! if only it had more than one 5.25" drive bay, so i'd put in a 5.25" floppy drive but it is a desktop case. I got the camera to work long enough to take two pictures, they'll be up on the kevcave soon.

oh btw its a Socket 5 pentium with a massive blue heatsink stuck to it! the heatsink says "100MHz" but i dont know if thats what the heatsink is supposed to bring it up to or if its a pentium 100.

Oh God I hate that stupid win bios.

About 4 years I worked at a used computer store. Mostly what we delt with was junk and was a pain in the ass to work with. One day this sound card just pushed me over the edge. So I went out in the parking lot backed over it with my truck, but with the sound card still under the tire. Reved the engine up to about 3500 and dropped the clutch. The tire ripped all of the componets off of the board and sent it flying about 15 feet.

1985 Ford Ranger 4wd 2.8l V6 5 speed. Second year the Ranger was built, the first year for the 4wd. I have never seen another V6 with as much low end torque as that one. I could easily tow 6000 lbs behind it. Man I do miss that truck, I wish I had kept it when I bought my new truck. It only had 215,000 miles on it, but I let it get too low on oil. Killed the rings and the motor would not hold compression any more. That, no ac and July in Texas prompted me to buy my current truck. But I did not have the time to do what I wanted to it so decided to sell it.

But its not as satisfying as seeing parts go flying through the rear view mirror.

If i'm on an Ipex and it acts up, i try and think of the day when i "rescue" a whole bunch of them from a trash can, and flatten them with a Holden, while having someone there to take piccies for me to upload.

Its an inanimate piece of equipment, unlike beating the crap out of somebody you cant stand or has harmed you, the sound card could care less. You also look like a dam fool to everybody around the shop doing something so unprofessional like that (also think about what would happen if the card hit somebodies car and made a dent).

I was trying to point out that if you beat the crap out of someone bugging you he wont bug you no more (problem solved). Beating the shit out of a soundcard doesnt make the next one work any better.

The sound card did not bother me any more either. Guess I should not menton the time we played football (socker) with a hard drive. Glad my boots were steel toed.

Though I did not look like a fool, the atmosphere of the place was very laid back and fun. One day we were just dead not a single person came in. So we took very tray load CD-ROM we could find in the place and raced them to see wich one could close the fastest. And we were always doing stuff like this.

Lol, reminds me of one time back in grade 8, i went to Big W with a bunch of mates on shopping leave one morning, and we must've spent about 20 minutes racing the cassete decks in the electronics section, to see which one would open the fastest.

Why not reverse engineer these poor slaves of the PC world into Mac components? Use a little Borg nanotechnology, add a twist of Lime and voila!

LOL...maybe. RAM and hard drives can be used on a Mac most of the time...30 pin SIMMs go into Compacts, older Quadras, LCs and LCIIs, 72 pinners go into newer LCs and Performas, as well as newer Quadras, IDE hard drives can be used in any Mac with an IDE bus, and SCSI HDs can be used in any Mac with a SCSI bus, 3.3v SDRAM DIMMs can be used in G3s, PCI video cards and other stuff can sometimes be recycled in PCI PowerMacs etc.
