I had a feling today's sales around Boulder would yield something good. But alas, after 4 hours of sailing, I was tired, and my girlfriend was hungry for breakfast.

I decided to hit up one more place. . .

Quadra 605
Quadra 950

$2

. . .lets see if they work!

950 works!. . .

If the Quadra 605 boots with a normal chime, the HD ticks away, everything spins as it should but shows black video, it very likely could be a dud battery.

Just jumping in early cos most 605s people find have that problem!

If it works out of the box though... well... all the better!

Danamania. . .you know your stuff! I was going to post about the 605 earlier, but I got the 950 going, so I played with that for a while. But you are totally correct, I hear the chime after boot up, but a black screen. So can a new battery fix me up with the 605?

maclovr. . .950s in pairs!?!?!? This thing is a cow all by itself! It is the same size as my Dual Pentium! Couldn't imagine having two. . .well, yes I can, I totally can!

By the way, the 950 came with what seem to be 2 pds cards. One is a video card (because of the video port). Has 4 RAM slots in it (empty). It also came with a card that has no slots in it at all. Almost looks like a giant card with a 68040 on it, but it has a squarish shield in the middle of what looks to be the processor. Maybe a processor upgrade?

The 950's display was all messed up with the vid card, so I took both the cards up to clean out the case. Will experiment more later on!

Is the card with the '040 on it a big 12" one? That sounds like a Radius Rocket!

Absolutely... and if you turn the 605 on, let it tick for a few seconds, then quickly turn it off then on again, you should get video. It works as a temporary measure if you can't get to a battery :)

That sounds a bit like the truevision nuvista setup that came in one of my 950s, that was once an Avid Workstation. Does the video card plug into the other card with a cable joining the two? Does the 68040-looking chip have something on it like "C-Cube" or "Jpeg codec" written on it?

is what mine looked like

I will take some shots and link to em. What I do know. . .When I put the card with "the processor" it takes longer to boot up. When I have the vid card in there I get various messy screens showing different resolutions, asking me to press the spacebar, but they are all jumbled up on the screen. . .

damn danamania. . .you are good! The starting up tip worked just fine. Looks like I need a battery, and a fresh os install for the 605--getting X's and ?'s on the floppy, but at least it seems the hardware is intact. Gonna have to find a floppy version OS, boot of the external scsi, or do a network install.

maclovr. . .the cards are both 12" monsters!

I took some shots of the cards. You can find them here:

http://www.everythingpossible.org/quadra950.html

sorry the page is so long. . .

Happy to find that 1/2 the RAM slots on the quadra are full of 16mb SIMMS. . .comp is showing 128mb (no virtual memory on), so that checks out.

The first card (the "video" card) has a bunch of "SuperMac" stuff on it. Toshiba also shows up on the card.

Let me know what you think!
thanks

Thanks to Tattle Tech, I have discovered the mystery card is a Linotype-Hell AG NuBus-CTU (color transfer unit). I am still researching what it does. . .any ideas?

LinoType Hell, eh? That name cracks me up.

But yeah, the mention of LinoType sounds like it's got something to do with desktop publishing.

Linotype-Hell make among other things, scanners. good scanners. REALLY good scanners. I used to work with one of the A4 flatbed scanners, worth several thousand dollars. Worth every cent for the quality that came out of it, too. Their postprocessing software was amazing stuff too

Looks like you have a really high end -something- card there. :)

Hmm...I'm not certain, but I think the color transfer card is used to drive a high-quality color printer (like a wax printer).

The GFX card looks nice, does it take LC or Quadra VRAM SIMMs? If so slap some on and up the VRAM . I bet it's still not as fast as my Radius Thunder IV that's now in my 7100cx tho

As for the Linotype card, It may be a Postscript accelerator for a Linotype printer. My Athlon PC at work sometimes struggles with Postscript stuff, so you can imagine how hard a 950 would find it!

The combination oft he two reeks to me of being in a type setting shop or something similar.

Linotype-Hell also made high quality scanners. The scanner would hook up to the scsi port and use the MacCTU card for transfering colors. I think these scanners are ubbbbbbber expensive! And probably pretty rare to find in working condition. And they are huge! I would rather have more space for 68ks!

The athlon struggles because it has to convert the output to postcrypt and back while the q950 would just dump it to the printer and let it sort it out via hardware. Kind of like why a new $3000 PC has one hell of a time trying to emulate in software a game made for a cheap $50 PSX1 with obsolete hardware.

BTW the ram slot of the thunder video card are for some kind of web cache and are not used for normal video card functions (basically worthless), they also dont take normal vram simms so dont bother trying.

Today was a piece of cake. I didn't even have much time. One hour to find something cool.

I go with some friends to breakfast and then we go out hunting. We didn't look far. Fairview High School Marching Band fundraiser. Those 3 macs looked like they wanted to escape, so I helped them out. Here's what I picked up:

-Macintosh SE
Original Software/Manuals/Cables (FULL!!)
-Quadra 630
-Performa 637
Original Software/Manuals/Cables

Other Hardware:
-Paperport Vx + Software/Manuals/Cables (looks NIB!)
-Stylewriter + Software (I think there was some kind of manual)
-LocalTalk Dongles (x2)
-Hayes Modem + Software/Manuals/Cables
-MacLand (looks like a scsi drive?!?!?) Software/Manuals/Cables
-Apple 15" Display
-3 Apple Keyboards (Design + Extended)
-3 Apple Mice (1 original square button)

Software:
-Aldus PageMaker + Manuals
-Microsoft Word 4 + Manuals
-Microsoft Works Suite 2001 + Manuals
-Quicken + Manuals
-Panorama 2.1 + Manuals

All in all a very complete liberation. . .

Now, lets see if they work!

G4, glad to hear I have an MLAer close by. Most of my 68k finds have been in North - Mid West Boulder (Around Mapleton and 9th found a Centris 610 and Quadra 950) and South Boulder (Table Mesa West of Broadway). Last weekend it was Fairview High School Marching Band fundraiser. I find that organizations have the best stuff when looking for computers.
G4, I work at the University and have heard that the Distribution Center on campus has a cache of 68k machines. I know our department just had them haul of 8 or so machines. Anyone can go there to peruse and purchase AS LONG as the University doesn't pay you. If you ever want to go check it out, I can make an appointment.

I agree that organization sales are often a good source of Macs. Last Saturday I missed the Fairview sale, but did get to one at Boulder High School -- no Macs at Boulder HS, but then I did not get there until very late in the sale. I also missed a sale at a storage locker place that claimed they were selling Macs (presumably from people who had abandoned their storage lockers??). I did find a couple of nice items on Saturday. A Syquest 270 removable drive was only $1 and a Powermac 7300/180 was $8. I saw a Plus over on Aurora, but I did not have room for it at home.

I went back and looked at some of your previous posts -- saw your "Macs Held Captive" thread. I notice that you might need someone to act as the buyer on your behalf? I'd like to help, but I am very busy with work right now (I'm sure you can understand). When is the next auction?

G4from128k

P.S. I like the goals of the E10 collective -- sustainability is very much needed in this world.

yes, actually the quadra 950 I got for $1 has quark xpress on it. Most macs I find here have design type stuff on em. . .photoshop, illustrator, quark, etc. . .

G4. . .going out tomorrow morning? It is my girfriend's last Saturday in Boulder for a while, so we are going to shop around tomorrow morning (I think she likes garage sales more than I do!). Seeing as her dad just gave me a beige G3 266 desktop, I might not be looking for any more macs for a while, but I will keep an eye out. . .If I see any macs, it will be hard NOT to liberate them. . .

I do want to go to Distribution Services. I do not know when the next auction is, but anyone can make an appointment to drop in during the week and shop.

Hope all is well. . .finally its Friday!

Yes, I'm going out tomorrow. The ads in the local newspaper suggest slim pickings, but I am sure my wife and I will visit a few sales (I also think my wife likes garage sales more than I do). Like you, I suspect I am reaching my Mac-saturation level. But it sure is hard to ignore the little beige devils, especially when they are destined for the landfill.

Congrats on the Biege G3! I have two sticks of 128MB PC66 RAM that I don't need right now. Perhaps we can work out a trade someday.

Good luck to everyone who is going garage saling tomorrow!

Some lucky mac lover landed a Boxed Quadra 610 today. I was going to grab it, but it was a bit pricey at $50 for the 610, monitor with original styrofoam pads, mouse and keyboard. Actually the price was not all that bad, just a little out of my range today. I probably could have talked it down to $25. I just went back a few minutes ago, and it seems the Quadra found a home. . .was that you G4?

The day was not a loss though! I picked up a Connectix Web Cam (Boxed w/ original software and manuals, video conferencing stuff) and a boxed System 7.5 complete with everything in the packing list. I am appeased. oh. . .also got some nice wire baskets to organize all my mac software and manuals.

Anyone else go sailing today?

Nope, I didn't buy that boxed 610. We must have a third 68k liberator in Boulder.

Congrats on the Connectix Web Cam and System 7.5.

Although I went g-sailing today, I did not buy any Macinstuff. I saw a 7200/120 at 10th & Evergreen, but did not ask the price because I feared I would be compelled to buy it if it were cheap enough. My only meager purchase was a M$ Windows 98 install booklet that I bought for 0.25 for the installation product key code. Its for a long-running, very frustrating, low priority project to get a Win 98-only peripheral working (please don't ask unless you want a very cranky forum member and a long rant). My wife did well today. She found a Palm IIIe that she bought as a backup for her current Palm III.

Hope everyone had a successful day of liberation and/or fun.

If I open my window all the bugs will get in…That's just one more reason to use a Mac!

You say that that 950 has QuarkXPress?

How far is Boulder, CO from Kingman, AZ?

yeah, the 950 has Quark. . .not sure of the version, pretty sure its 4. Sunday I returned to the sales and picked up a full version of Quark 3.01, manuals, box, software. The box is a bit beat, but the software and manuals are intact. . . .

Get this! Sunday, my girlfriend and I went to Steamboat because one of our friends has a place up there. We stayed overnight and went to the hot springs yesterday. As we start our drive back we see a "moving sale" sign. Now we were in the middle of nowhere and it was Monday at 4pm, not too many garage sales happen at those times. . .so we kept driving. My girlfriend asked me if I wanted to go back, and something inside me said yes! So we went back to the signs. . .it prompted us to drive 7 miles off of our original route to get to the place. So we start off, eventually the pavement REALLY ends and we are on some rough ass stuff, really rough for a Saturn! As we bagan to doubt the sale, we saw more signs. . .just as we hit 7 miles, we see the house. We follow the signs that point us around the house and into the basement. The home owner confirms that there is indeed a sale today. We peruse, and nothing is of interest. . .untill. . .I see
Commodore 64c w/ disk drive, printer (+ printer paper!), monitor, all manuals, a disk caddy, and a bunch of disks. She started it up and it works! I only had $10, she wanted $50, she let me have it for $10. I don't know much about these machines, but I thought it would be a good buy. . .and I drove 7 miles out because of a hunch!

Are moving/garage/estate sales following me!?!?!?!?
