Obviously, everyone here knows about the evil anti-MLA force known as the PAF, or Parental Approval Factor, for those who don't know. Anyway, I was just thinking of all th ose Macs at the recycling centre that Flash showed us piccies of back when this place first started up. And it makes me wonder....by liberating 68ks and stopping them from going into the dumpster, we are also helping the environment, as computers are classified as hazardous waste, due to the lead in monitors, acid in batteries, and all that other evil stuff deep down inside those boxies. And, well, it really does make me wonder if 68kMLA soldiers that are suffering with PAF could explain to their parents about how this contributes to a better environment by helping stop hazardous wastes go into landfill....

Tricky. Such an explanation might increase PAF if the parents care about the Earth. OTOH, mentioning that computers contain toxic waste might scare computer-illiterate parents and lower PAF. YMMV.

Tried it, it doesnt work. "Who Cares" was the result.

Bummer! Apathy combined with negativity is the worst possible combination. It's like trying to convince a grumpy rock to move.

If the parents won't let you pursue your interest in computers, you could always show them your new scary friends (get a friend to dress up as a mutant goth-biker-stoner) to show them the alternative of your nice clean, safe computer hobby.

yeah... my parents understand this, so they used to not let me go inside computers, and we only dump off computers at RePC or give them to people...

although, with RePC it does give liberators (in seattle or tukwila wa) a chance to reliberate machines because of their as-is section that most things go to...

PC's will be considered hazardous waste in 50 years and will cost a mint to get rid of at that time.

Remember when tires could be easily tossed in the trash? Now you have to pay to dispose of tires.

So? Technically, any battery operated device has hazardous materials in it, in the battery. Even that annoying radio that Dad uses to listen to the ABC.

Yeah, but in 50 years, you won't want to chuck out one of today's PCs, because they'll be considered antiques by then.

When I replace the battery to get the Mac working again, I just throw the old one out, so in that department, at least, it's not making that much of a difference.

Let's also not forget about all the lead in the solder on the motherboard. I think capacitors have some nasty chemicals in them too.

Lightning: You bring up some very good points there, but a couple of batteries aren't as dangerous as a whole computer, loaded with lead and acid and other evil stuff. But yeah, i knew about all the evil stuff in capacitors and the lead in solder. I was just a bit sleepy last night.
