Just scored one from ebay for 35 bucks, pretty sweet because it looks like it has never been used, no yellowing at all, no nicks, nothing. Still has the keys and the DAT drive, which I think is pretty cool. Anybody know what kind of tape that thing uses and where I can get a couple of tapes for it, and what the specs are on it? I think it is 2GB native/4GB compressed. They also took the elusive 5 drive shelf <doh!>, now I will have to wedge them in there with some foam and some duct tape. I am gonna use this baby for my video editing machine with my Radius Telecast. Its going to make for a real hell of a vintage Macintosh. Not exactly a 68K but close, and it is the replacement for my Quadra 950 which was acting flaky with the telecast. I was going to buy one from shreve but they wanted to rip me off at 100 bucks, no memory and no DAT drive.Logan Edited by - maclover5 on 26 Jul 2003 18:29:06 |

heh...yeah... I don't know what a telecaster is though... for tapes, check eBay, see if the major media companies like maxell and the others make compatible tapes, and see if there's websites that might still sell them or something... I think dds-1 dat spec is 2gb normal/4gb compressedI have 2 dds-2 dat drives that do 4gb/8gb on 120meter tapes. I use the internal on a PC server and the external on my 840av also take note: Never run a 7100, 8100, 8150, or 9150 without a PDS video card or a PDS terminator. This can damage the motherboard. If the video card goes bad, you can replace it with another video card or use motherboard video after installing a PDS accelerator or "Apple Terminator, PDS, WGS 81XX." thank you, BoJ, for that wonderful revelation...You might consider that if it's a standard, and it's old, it'll be relatively easy to find I'd think... dunno though... Unknown if it is DDS1 I may have some tapes for it. I would be happy to let you have them for shipping. I'll try and find them so I can verify that.--edit found them I have 5 new DDS1 tapes. 3 used DDS1 tapes and 8 used DDS2 tapes. I also have a DDS cleaning tape. If you want them shoot me an email. --Eric ___________________________ Have you seen my mojo? Edited by - redrouteone on 26 Jul 2003 22:19:30 |

Ok, this has been pretty helpful. What I am still in the dark about is what software do I have to have to use the tape drive and where can I get it, maybe for cheap or free too. And dont worry, I have got the PDS terminater in there, so no smoke is coming from it yet unknown_k. The only upgrade I have seen for the 9150 is a G3 proc card, what other little goodies can I stuff into the PDS slot? Is there a Video input card? If I put a G3 in there, could I run OS X?Logan

nope, 9150 is NuBus and OSX needs PCI macs... and even then it doesn't work with ALL PCI macs as far as I know...good luck with software... Dantz Retrospect __._ or whatever version should do ya fine... it's what was included with the AWGS 68ks I believe... I have retrospect around somewhere (thats what I used on my 840av) I will try to find it.Q950 you should get a hold of a cheap dds-2 drive on ebay if you want to double your storage space. I purchased 10 dds2 tapes a while ago on ebay for $10 (good deal for unused in shrink wrap brand name tapes) I think but I quickly stuff them full of old mac software or PC data.

Ok cory, the telecast is the supreme video input box for the nubus line of macs. It supports RGB, YUV, S and composite video in and outs and digital and analog audio in and out. The whole idea of it is to offload the encoding of digital video to the telecast box and a pair of nubus boards inside the computer. This allows the box to handle the video without loading down the computer with encoding. I will try to post some pictures. I tried it in my Quadra 950 and it worked great, the video was master quality, you couldnt tell the difference from the DVD player I used as a test source. I have an old RAID array I am going to resurrect, does anyone have some RAID software, like FWB or Apple's RAID toolkit? Isnt my drive already a DDS2 drive? The reason I think it is is because of this auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2743911832&category=11150&rd=1 It is a DDS2 and it was pulled from a WGS 9150, so I figure it is the same as mine. If it is only a DDS1 drive, what is its native capacity?BTW, I got an HPV card for it, its in the mail, what kind of memory does that take?Logan

I checked that link, its a DDS-2 4/8gb drive. You said yours was 2/4gb which is dds-1. Open the unit up and read the model number.

I popped the top on the 9150 and took some pictures of it, the telecast and the tape drive. The tape is a 4 GB, which I assume is 4GB uncompressed and hopefully 8 GB compressed. Cory, here are some pictures of the Telecast I think you will find interesting. http://home.cfl.rr.com/jupiterheights/tape.jpg http://home.cfl.rr.com/jupiterheights/telecastback.jpg http://home.cfl.rr.com/jupiterheights/telecastfront.jpg http://home.cfl.rr.com/jupiterheights/telecastlogo.jpg http://home.cfl.rr.com/jupiterheights/tower.jpgLogan

Thanks cory. I have never seen a similar device that plugged into the Firewire port that gave as many ports, especially the super hi-quality ones like the YUV DVD-style plugs, or the AES/EBU and timecode connectors. I bet if one existed, I would be expensive because it would be a relatively new piece of equipment compared to the telecast, which cost 15,000 new and only 35 used. I would say that the telecast is like one of the few killer pieces of hardware that justifies actually buying an entirely different computer, IMO. I'll keep you posted on how the tape drive works, like if it is convenient and cost effective to use and what not.

yeah... I believe it has something to do with how the tapes are a sequential or a random access thing, as opposed to however the hard drives do it...Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |
