So you've been reading your server logs, your firewall has picked up something from an unknown IP address, or you are just plain ol' curious like me. Have you ever wondered where in the world that IP is? Check out http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation and you can find out

Scary huh? All the more reason why you shouldn't list peoples IP addresses, right BoJ? (if you wanted to do the decent thing, you should edit part of that post - you know the one i'm talking about)

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation.

Wow, that's not cool. Why would they need latitude and longtitude coordinates on there?. Although I now know how far I'm from Toronto...

Says I'm in Battle Creek and that's nowhere near where I am. Right state, anyways.

They could get logs from the ISP and find out where I really am, though.

hehehe... that is kinda weird... I wonder how they do it... other than saying that any ISP has a range of IPs for a certain area or something....

That's how they do it. That's why it thinks I'm in Battle Creek, over 100 miles from where I actually am.Go to Top of Page

To be honest without sounding like I don't care (I do and yes that post was edited) there is no privacy online. If you are online in MSn or AIM in 2 seconds you can find out someone's IP address easy as pie.

IP addresses are easy to come by and there is no true anonymous internet with the exception of those that use proxy servers. Most folks don't, so this info is available anywhere, and with the advent of google you can track anyone online. Just do a search in google for "cinemafia" and you will be able to see what forums cinemafia posts at, what websites he runs etc etc. It's just too easy these days.

That's why I like switching names alot. It confuses people and leaves bots with outdated information. Not a foolproof way, but at least I am one step ahead.

I can locate the address 127.0.0.1, it is your computer! 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address used for testing network services, like the IP stack. It would be erroneous to try and put a definition on that IP in a internet-wide index. Still, the whole idea of being able to tell where someone's IP is based from is pretty cool, even if it isnt foolproof.
