I was just cleaning up the basement from all my computer stuff and I came across a busted SyQuest 88mb drive that I bought for $2. I didn't know that it was busted when I bought it but at the same time I purchased two 40mb Quantum HD's (I'm guessing from some SE's). Tonight I thought I'd experiment and took the broken 88mb drive out and popped in the old 40mb. I know have an external 40mb hard drive. I just got it to work on the first try with a Performa 5200. Now if I just could get the ethernet card working...Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

You can just pretend that the big gaping hole in the front where the cartridges used to go is "ventilation." Is the space inside that 88MB enclosure big enough for a CD-ROM drive?G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

Cool, then it would make a nice case for a external CD-ROM. Or you could install one of those ancient monster 5 1/4 form factor HDs that Apple used in early II-series machines. I have two of these monsters, one from a Mac II and another from a IIcxG4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

LOL! you know... I did that exact same thing, LONG ago...the SyQuest drive even fits perfectly inside a mac where a CDROM would otherwise go...
also, those cases fit GREAT under a compact mac like the SE fdhd Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" I have alot of posts... if you don't like it than I don't know what to say. |

Yeah I was thinking that. But I already have a caddy 2x apple CD rom and a Lacie 4x CD burner. The Quantum 40mb was the only internal scsi drive that I wanted to be external. Although I used to have one of those 5 1/2 monster drives from a IIx until it died. LOL! I know where you are coming from. I too have a motley assortment of SCSI enclosures from various working and broken garage sale CD-ROMs and HDs. I leave one of them empty and completely open (with the lid off) for use as a drive testbed.G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

I used to use my crappy old dead caddy CD drive as a SCSI chain extender, since I only had a number of quite short cables.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

yeah... up until just last summer I dint' have ANY external scsi stuff...it's kind of weird how you think... "how did I ever live without cdrom on this computer" for awhile... then after you're doneinstalling A/UX, the cdrom drive goes back into the performa, and the case yo uput the drive in goes back into the closet...
