My first question is about how much banwith a typical forum using Yabb (I think) uses a month, with lets say 1000 members (I can aim high . Before you accuse me of trying to hijac 68KMLA, what I am aiming for, is not 68K, or for that matter Mac specific. Think conglomeration of ever computer related forum on earth .

Since I have decided to go down the forum route, according to my financial planning, I should have some spare cash, after my purchase of a car which my parents are 'strongly encouraging' me to get. and a cheap computer to do some BeOS programming in (mabye a mac, see how this pans out). Ofcourse, this is after I finally get a job at Woolies, only 300 to my name right now. So, I have decided Ill pool my money and go for a nice trip to the world best computer expos, the cheapest way possible, probably in the year 2005 though I might go after uni (which, with a combined Chemical Engineering / German would be the year 2010) (just before you start thinking that I am a bit odd in planning this so early, your probably right. I plan anyhting I do to precise detail way before I do it ). What I need to know is what are some noticeable expos/conferences in the computing arena? BeGeistert is in (which makes nice use of 4 years of german, plus 5years if done after uni, if BeGisert is still around then..), MacWorld ofcourse and Wakefield (Its a RiscOS thing).

I know that my forum used about 31MB of bandwidth in a month, that was Ikonboard, and it was very 'graphic' much more so than YaBB...

but i had about 17 members, and a total of just under 500 posts I believe...

Im sure my mother would go to these meetings, my father is prety good with it all, but my mother is incredibly disaproving. So, 21mb times by 500 is 1Gb, at least I have so more numbers to work on now. What kind of connection is a minimum to run a reltivaley large forum on?

I've heard of people running forums off of cable modems, although I think it'd be really slow. DSL or ISDN might be good.

Hmm, Ill probably get the page hosted by a professional hosting company. 1gb a month with one I found is 4 dollars a week. Sounds prety good to me

My forums were run off of a cable modem

and I _THINK_ that it was 21MB it may well have been 210MB... probablyt not though

I've had a decent (3 or 4) people using my forum over dialup (the server on dialup) before... it is slow as all get-out (or whatever) but it seems to work

Iwould suggest that a forum should have some type of focus or some reason for motivating people to return. There are so many many fora out there that it is hard for a new forum to rise above the pack and attract a solid set of members.

On the otherhand, if all you want is a place where a few buddies can hang out (and don't want to use instant messaging, IRC, etc.) then your own personal forum is a fine idea.

If you want to attract a solid following, then ask yourself: "What can people get at my forum that they can't get anywhere else?"

forums that are not just "mac-centric" are wonderufl.. it's a great change from the mac-only attitude that some forums carry, and it's great to combine different interests into forums that people are willing to come back to...

Hi,

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead, but I need some mroe insight in forums and I thought it would be best to carry on in athread instead of making a new one. I have been thinking about this and I know now that I will not be able to self host a forum, both due to suitable bandwith, and no computer available. SO what I need is a hosting account that is relitively cheap, and allows for a good forum software.

So, my questions are:-

1. What is the best forum software available that is free or cheap? It also needs to be customizable graphically.

2. What companies allow for hosting of forums for a good cheap price? I know Invision Power Services offer such a service, but it is only with their software, Invision Power Board.

3. Who would be intereasted in becomme a mod for various topics if this ever comes into frution?

Once again, I want to highlight that I am not hijacking 68KMLA members, what I am aiming for, would allow both to exist perfectly seperately.

If you're looking for a host I have used a few now.

Although I've only been with iPowerWeb for a week I can highly recommend them. They only have one account but 500MB of space with 30gig a month, mySQL, perl and PHP I have everything I need. They also have an extremely nice control panel for configuring your account, much better than Plesk. You get a free domain name too, or an extension on the registration of your old one!

1. YaBB or phpBB no matter what...

2. I could give snc.jsellnau.us a plug here... It's what I'm hosted on. Something like $20 a month for 100MB, 15 e-mail addys, php/MySQL. Don't know about bandwith, it should be plenty. The only problem is downtime.

3. I'll mod... Expertise in Hardware & OSs.

I want to! I really watn to! But I cant. Its not so much the problem of getting a computer, its broadband. I live in an un-cabled area, so my only option is ADSL (or satelite, but there is no way on earth Im paying for that). If I went with ADSL, I could only get 256/64, 512/128 or 1500/256, all of which would cost me a prety penny. Powweb looks prety nice though.
