Hey everyone, just thought i'd jot down how my trip to Goodwill went. The store i went to isn't your normal goodwill it is a bulk store where you usually pay by the pound. Sometimes this is good others its not. Today it worked out very good for me. First thing i found was an old HP scanner which i did not need so i put it back in the bin. Next was an old APPLE II monitor still nothing i needed. Then i saw something i had been looking for awhile A Mac IIci. Case was alittle dirty but no problem there. I popped open the case to see what was hiding. Full ram slots (later i found out it was only 8 megs but still good enough). Lots of dust bunnies (Canned air fixed that), It seemed to have a recently replaced harddrive. Paid a whopping $2.95 for it. Took it home, did some quick research on Lowendmac and Everymac.com plugged it in, hooked it up to an old apple 14 inch monitor and walla it works. Booted up into Mac OS 7.6, still had a bunch of programs on it. checked the trash and the files in it were dated 1/13/03. This makes my 7th macintosh, Girlfriend was very pissed but she'll live with it =) Take it easy everyone, PowerComputing 120 40/340/4x PowerComputing 100 32/340 7200/75/32/500/4x Color Classic 10/250 LCIII 8/160 Mac IIci 8/300 LC 0/0

Wow, good one!The Goodwills (read:greedwills) around here try to get you. Regardless of the computers age, type, or condition, it's a minimum $150.00 RIP-OFF. Last time I stopped in they had an old 486sx tower, untested, with 14" RGB display for $350.00 in their "showcase" I realize it's not a Mac but a great example of their pricing scheme. ---- Macintosh Classic 2 MB RAM / 40 MB HD Asante EN/SC Ethernet Kensington Tilt-N-Swivel System 6.0.7 |

I hardly ever buy full systems at Goodwills. They do charge way too much for complete computers. I saw a Packard Bell 486ish for $200. I laughed and walked away. The bulk store which i bought the IIci at, usually has 4 to 5 different systems a day none are complete. They charge by the pound so a heavy computer cost more. The IIci was very light hence the good price. I saw a full tower (10 5 1/4 bays) with a 386DX in it for over $50. i nearly laughed out loud in the store. In my area (Ocala florida) we dont have many thrift stores so i deal with what i got. I've been lucky so far.PowerComputing 120 40/340/4x PowerComputing 100 32/340 7200/75/32/500/4x Color Classic 10/250 LCIII 8/160 Mac IIci 8/300 LC 0/0 Edited by - BeninOcala on 27 Jul 2003 10:47:23

wow! what ia great find the iici macs are great because you can stand them on their side, or as a desktop like other Mac IIs... Apple or Kensington even made a kit tha tyou could use to attach the IIci/IIcx and Quadra 700 (ithink) to the bottom of your desk! I've seen some good deals at goodwill before I'd think... almost picked up a nearly complete looking LaserWriter for loke... $2 and also one time, a mac Plus... I guess it depends on where the goodwill is located as to what price the equipment goes for. Poor neighborhoods sell stuff cheaper then rich ones.I dont think I ever hit a goodwill store but there is one around here and I think I will check it out.

well... as far as I've seen, in poor neighborhoods, the computer junk goes for WAY more...in the 'rich' and 'middle class' neighborhoods, it's cheap because it's common, and people are more educated about it. That's a good point. The store in question was in West Palm Beach, Florida (Riviera Beach to be exact) and isn't in a very good location. I'm sure everyone's got some good stories of strange people / places while looking for 68k Macs to liberate. My recent: I was in a local thrift store and inquired about Apple computer goods. He leads me back to a metal cabinet with 2 (oh yeah, two) huge padlocks and inside.... A box of misc. Manuals (odd LaserWriter manuals and a couple 7100 manuals) and a cd - MacOS 7.6.1 Then he says that they're worth a fortune and he's gonna put 'em on eBay because "people collect and sell them like comic books.' I got a bunch of cd's from a guy on lowendmac swaplists for $7 each. I think they are OS 7.6.1, 7.5.3, 8.1 and another I cant remember.I also have an original 8.5 and 7.0 on floppies I got for free Lots of people are tossing the old OS cd's since they dont have the original machines for them anymore. Ebay is great for hardware sometimes, but software tends to go higher then I would like.

if you could help me out. . .I have only found different languages, but unfortunately, I speak english. . .I would love to be able to download it, but I would also love to just have a disc of it in case I ever need it again. As of now, I have a 80SC hd that I use to download all my progs to. I can hook it up to my G3 at work (man, that G3 is nice!) and hotline some stuff, but i have not found a reliable 7.6 download. So thats why I am looking on ebay. Any help finding a reliable 7.6 source would be appreciateed. Also, I could probably find it on my own. . .but my girlfriend is on to me about my 68kMLA desires. . .time is of the essence! _________________________ I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it. |

Point your Hotline to: 80.14.36.98 with a blank l/p. In the Uploads for Guest folder, you'll find MacOS 7.6.img. I hope that's what you're looking for.Edited by - The Lightning Stalker on 01 Aug 2003 20:03:16 |

Greedwill is right, my last trip there: a Plus with a BEAT Imageriter and some system disks - the Plus was as yellow as a banana and smelled smoky (I always sniff them, I know it looks wierd, but its the easiest way to avoid buying burnt hardware!) They wanted $49.99 for the Plus and $29.99 ImageWriter. I ran the other way - quickly!Macs Liberated: 9 - 6400/180 (main Mac), 660AV, 636CD, LCIII+, LCII (2), Classic II, Classic and SE. Goodwill appears to charge a lot for stuff in their regular stores, but their final sale and buy-the-pound stores are much more reasonable. Still, their prices are still high enough that I question every last purchase, and they probably loose a lot of my money because of that, but it may also be for my own good. (I had arrangement with a thrift store near my last place, and ended up with a 300 square foot computer room!)

Lol, that reminds me of that time i was in Cash Converters (a second hand goods store here in Aussie), looking at a PB145B that they were selling for AU$245. However, they told me that "its old and slow, but for an extra $100, i can get one with a Pentium chip thats much faster". A few months later, i got enough parts to build myself a working 145B for free. Which reminds me of the time my Duo was stolen. I picked it up at a computer recycler for $15 and it was stolen within months. The police managed to recover it from a pawn shop, and left the price tag on it -- they were asking $175 for it. I sure felt like going to that pawn shop to see what they would give me for it.

Good old Crap Converters ... they probably paid someone a tenner for it too. Incidentally, there was a 540C at the Cash Converters in Elizabeth St. in Melb not long back, $75 which actually isn't too bad a price. Everything else in there is a rip-off but! JB.
