Bigpond cable on a 68k

From the small amount of research I've done, it seems that Bigpond cable is unusual in that it requires a client app (launchpad) to be running for a connection to be active. The supplied mac client specifies OS8.6 or greater... a bit out of reach for the Q800. Not sure if it's fat or not either. Do I need to connect thru a ppc using IPnetrouter? or can I go direct?
